Did the latest Cumulative Update + whatever else and I had already restarted twice. I then decided to shut down and after I clicked that, the PC went into restart.
Perhaps the system was miffed at me or something? There was no further update activity going on, so I'm guessing a simple malfunction.
They do happen now and again.

If the Microsoft update app at shutdown moment decides that there is need for another restart, it will force the computer to do so.
There's nothing you can do to avoid that (besides keeping the on/off button pressed).
That's why I have the working hours registered in the settings from 7:00 am until 1:00 am next day (which is the maximum).
And delay the updates to a moment that suits me, by having set the network as metered connection.
So that I always can decide myself when the update(s) should take place and when I do the necessary restarts.

Good idea. I have Group Policy set to allow downloads but always ask me to install.

I seem to recall seeing that if I select update and shutdown it will complete my updates first which may require a restart and only then will it shutdown. In other words, there a restart as part of the update process, then a final shutdown. I'd have to test it again, but it makes sense to avoid wasting time finishing the update process the next time you start your system.

BTW, there is also clearly some different API or process used for a restart when applying Windows updates vs selecting to restart from the menu. I have an older MSI motherboard that will restart just fine every single time guaranteed EXCEPT when a Windows update reboots the system. If Windows update restarts the system, then every single time the system will fail to restart and boot to a UEFI command line.

The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

I actually do my updates at night. When the update has completed, I shutdown my computer. That has never been overridden for me. When I next restart the computer, it boots, finishes updating post boot and enters into Windows.
