Solved New to Thunderbird. Two icons on taskbar when program is open?

I've just (yesterday) installed TBird for the first time, and I like it very much so far. (I was just plain tired of the performance of the built-in W11 Mail app.)

The one thing I'd like to change and can't find help with on the Web is the fact that when the TBird program is open, it drops a second copy of the icon onto the taskbar. None of my other taskbar icons duplicate themselves when their programs are open. If you know how I can stop this double-icon behavior, please tell.

Hi wisewiz,
You need to install an extension called Minimize on startup.

minimize to tray :: Search :: Add-ons for Thunderbird

addons.thunderbird.net

Choose the first one.
Note: It's not ideal and I don't know why the behavior is like that but at least it moves the second icon to the tray.

OK, Do this:
Close Thunderbird.
Remove the launch icon from the taskbar
Launch Thunderbird.
Right-click the icon that just appeared and select Pin to taskbar.
Below it's open.

And now closed.

~~Whoa! That sent me back to start-over mode, with nothing set up as it was a few minutes ago.~~

All's well now. Your solution worked, but I had to uninstall that add-on. With the add-on, the icon problem was gone, but when I launched TBird, it started to open, then the window disappeared, and I had to click the icon again to bring the window back up. I guess it was minimizing, but I saw nothing in the tray. Anyhooooo,

As for the starting-over-from-scratch thing, crossed out above, I had to edit the icon's launch shortcut a bit. I have no idea how that happened, but it's working correctly now.

It's fixed. Thank you again, as ever. (Points clicked above, as appropriate.) I'll mark 'er solved.

I am a big fan of Thunderbird, and I say that having used Outlook for years.- I still do on my main rig-
It's fast, low-impact, and well-supported.

This used to happen to me with Vivaldi in the past, but never Thunderbird (so maybe it's a Windows bug). What version are you on? I'm on 102.11.0. I installed, pinned to Start, and from Start, pinned to taskbar. No duplicate icons. You shouldn't need an extension.

I'm on 102.11.0 Portable, and I got it fixed with a little help from my friend @OAT (above), and you're right, I didn't need (or want) the extension. In fact, the extension buggered things up on my program, so I uninstalled it. It's running perfectly now, and I'm really looking forward to the July release of v. 115, "Supernova." Thanks for coming in on this.

My pleasure. Thunderbird has been my go-to for some time now. For someone not afraid to tinker a bit, I believe it offers a great combination of power and flexibility.
