Non manufacturer batteries - are they ok?

I've always stuck to manufacturer only batteries, but am looking at a used laptop that needs a new battery and the hp ones aren't available any more. There are so many people selling "compatible" batteries, but I'm wary. Although I notice duracell make one so presumably they are reliable? I just remember all sorts of talk about a decade ago of batteries exploding etc that weren't original manufacturer ones. Is this still the case or is a third party battery ok now?

Some issues i had with "compatible" batteries, that not all the statistics could not be read out of the battery. That would be able to read out of a manufacturer battery. And some stats might be diffrent, like max time, faster draining of bat life, or some get a bit hotter.

All that I can suggest is looking for reviews of specific "compatible" batteries.

You may want to avoid the cheapest ones, that may lack safety certifications.

I have used 3rd party batteries a number of times and never had an issue.

People often say a 3rd party battery will not have the same life as an oem battery but hey less than half the cost, so who cares?

Thanks. This laptop comes with a "new battery" so I was thinking I might want to change it but the manufacturer one isn't available. So I'm thinking the new one might be a cheap iffy one! It's an external battery btw, not an internal one. Old laptop.

I have replaced the battery in my HP laptop twice so far with a non-HP battery from an agent in Canada but likely sourced from China. They have performed just as well as the original. The original was replaced when it would only hold the charge for about 50%. The first replacement lasted as long but started to swell. The second one is going strong.

Lithium Ion or Nickel Cadmium?

I had a 2008 Compaq laptop that may have used the latter. NiCads were inferior to Li Ion, but they didn't tend to blow up. They still could start fires, though.

If I had to choose, I would go for the Duracell. In fact, when I buy batteries I only buy Duracell. you know the Double A's and Triple A's etc.

NiCads don't blow, as far as I recall.

But they have a high enough current capability to do bad things if short-circuited.

I'm looking at a used HP Elitebook Revolve 810 G3. He wants £320 for it and it's 10 years old! Been trying to get the price down. Says he'll go down to £250 without the battery and without the ssd (ie I get my own battery and ssd). I asked for a lower price saying I already have an ssd.

I'd quite like one but not sure I want to spend £250 on a 10 year old laptop with a 4th gen processor, when I can get a 10th gen laptop for that price!

But I like the small format. It's Core i7 but I think maximum ram is 8gb.

4gb is onboard so presumably you can't have more than 4gb in the other slot? Don't you have to have matching amounts?

I wouldn't. But that's me, I want something a little more up to date. ha ha.

I believe you can get a much more up to date laptop for about the same price. I'm assuming you don't want to go online with this machine.

It's hard to find something small with a decent processor.

I'm sure it would run windows 11. Tempted to go for the £100 one but Core i7 is much nicer - but silly price for a 10 year old laptop.

For £250 I could get a Surface go 3 which is also small but not a proper laptop and only slow processors. I'm looking for a replacement for my netbook for occasional use (which won't run Windows 11 any more).

I'm pretty sure a third gen i5 would run Windows 11. I have an i5 15.6 Lappy that runs Windows 11. In fact, it came with Windows 11.

With my problem of having to learn to walk again, and wanting to be on the computer, I need a 14 inch lappy that I can handle with this bum hand. The hand is getting better but in the mean time I need something smaller. Can't find anything new with Windows 11 for less than about 450 US.
