I'm being bombarded with popups with the latest news from the Australian tennis open. They only persist briefly on my desktop and then disappear without trace and my wife is getting them on her phone too. I took the drastic step of turning off ALL notifications and it hasn't made the slightest difference. I use Firefox with Google search engine and she uses Chrome which I guess also uses Google. I've never received this type of notification previously and I'm only getting them about this tennis tournament. Any thoughts?

WOW! My first thought would be a 'Cookie' that you and your wife have both received on your device.
Personally, I would set about cleaning out the cookies on your device.
Also look in Startup in your Task Manager and see if there is anything there. Disable anything that you don't recognize or that you (don't) need.

It's the middle of the night over there so nothing for the last few hours but if it persists there will be quite a few more in the morning. Can't see cookies being behind it but if it does restart in the morning I'll try clearing them.

If clearing cookies and cache doesn't resolve the issue for you, you may wish to consider trying Malwarebytes AdwCleaner.

Out of the blue this evening I got a popup from a different sporting event and managed to establish where it had come from - eurosport.co.uk, I've now added that domain to my popup blocker and am hopeful that will be the end of it, but won't know for sure until the morning. I don't use eurosport regularly although I may have looked at it from time to time during a Google search but puzzled as to how this one site has caused this issue when so many other Googled sites have not. Let you know in the morning.

Thank you Porthos - eurosport was there, along with this domain. I did previously give elevenforum.com permission but have never been asked by eurosport so Lord knows how it got it. Anyway, I now know what to do should this happen again. Thanks again!

That is why I turn off all notifications on my client's computers. Websites do not always ask for permission and sneak them into your system.

Don't know if it will make a difference, but I use DuckDuckGo as my default instead of Google search.

The solution is in #8, it isn't a search engine problem
