Once Win11 24H2 rolls out, does that mean my old PCs are toast?

Currently running 23H2 on an 'unsupported' system.

The recent news that MS will enforce the hardware requirements for Win 11 24H2 means that all of my current systems will not be able to run the new versions.

How long will 23H2 be supported?

Looks like my long put-off jump to Linux is not too far away!

Never say never.
Just as with 23H2, time was needed. If there is any hope for anything that it wont run on, maybe more time will be needed.

A lot of people say that, I have not seen one who actually followed through and they are still on this forum using Windows 11

Hi.
You can still continue to install 24H2 version by simple workarounds ( setup.exe /product server ) if your CPU has POPCNT instruction in it. To check POPCNT, please download coreinfo from Microsoft Sysinternals and run it. It will give you a list of your CPU capability including POPCNT.

As far as I know, the only change with 24H2 will be a requirement that the CPU support SSE 4.2. You can check that using CPU-Z (free).

I'm running the 24H2 preview (26100.1457) on an unsupported laptop. (Gen6 CPU.)

Unless your "unsupported" systems are older than roughly 20 years, I expect there will be no problem.

If you wish to move to Linux, you may need to find another justification.

My CPUs are all good - I assumed it would be enforcement of the TPM requirements that would sink my ship(s)...

You know what though, Linux Mint (xfce) is actually pretty great - I've used it on and off for the past 10 years and it certainly reached 'maturity' as a desktop alternative many years ago. One of the main reasons I still run Windows is for Paint Shop Pro 10 (a Windows XP-era bit of kit!) :-)

The “product server” bypass was killed in the recent builds.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. Yes, it was. But the 24H2 build 26100.xxx can still be installed with this switch.

I believe the conversation is about when 24H2 is a release.

You could be right. A modification may be made in the software to kill the switch before version 24H2 (build 26100.xx) is released for general availability. We will know when the release is out.

I know for a Fact someone will edit the ISO to remove *The File (remove that cpu check) and so Forth. I'll test on my Computer ofc

24H2 IS OUT, and has been for months!!! It's just a matter of where you look for it.
It's a little bit different than 23H2, but not a lot. As long as your CPU includes the SSE 4.2 instruction set, you're good to go.

I'm actually running a Lighter version of 24H2, called, "Windows 11/Pro, Optimum 24H2, V4.1. (Here on this 12 yr old PC) It's small, fast and 100% enjoyable to use. I just got V4.2 this morning, but it's on a different SSD and still under construction, but I did have it on both Internet and email this morning, within an hour of the download.
The download (2.52 GB) took less than ten minutes, and the install to the SSD took about ten minutes. And it installed without any of those stupid MS questions. Rufus took care of that!

Computer Life is so much more enjoyable, when you know where to look for what you need! (Or, just what you WANT!)

You can still continue to install 24H2 version by simple workarounds ( setup.exe /product server ) if your CPU has POPCNT instruction in it. To check POPCNT, please download coreinfo from Microsoft Sysinternals and run it. It will give you a list of your CPU capability including POPCNT.

I just read a report where it was suggested they've gotten rid of the "product server" workaround in upcoming versions.

You can download the appropriate 24H2 .iso and then use Rufus to generate a 24H2 bootable USB drive.

On the first screen that is presented you when you start running Rufus, you will be able to 'negate' all the 24H2 requirements,

I've read that the SSE 4.2 requirement cannot be avoided, because 24H2 actually uses its instructions, and will crash if they aren't available.

Is that incorrect?

Well it'll half boot but restarts hence crashes. It'll install yes but as before reboots upon the 3rd attempt after all the install stuff
