Passwords between PC's on same network issue

I'm running the latest version of Windows. I have a small network in my home. I have three PC's on that network. Generally in the past all I had to do is to Map network drives between the machines and I can go to just about any drives between the mapped PC's. My problem is that now, every time I try to peruse the files between PC's there is a black popup appears that requests a Password. I've never used a password between the PC's so I don't have a clue what to enter. It doesn't give any kind of "forgot password" option to solve the issue. I have enabled sharing between PC's with no password in advanced network settings. What could I do to resolve this issue? "More choices" is no help

Hi.

Are you sure it isn’t asking for the user account password for the Microsoft/Windows account for the remote PC?

Lately, more frequently at least since 23H2, communications between some PC’s on a network have been hindered if the computers use pins to be logged into instead of passwords.

If the remote computer you are trying to connect/login to is using a Pin and not password login, you will possibly need to sit at that remote computer and sign out of the computer then sign back into it using that computers Microsoft/Windows User/Password.

Now try to connect again with remotely from the other computer.

You should only need to do this once, future connections should work even if the remote computer is using a pin.

Here is an example where this particular solution has worked.

Remote Desktop Connection

I have a Win 10 Pro PC upstairs which I want to access from my Win 11 Pro laptop downstairs using Windows Remote Desktop but get this error every time I attempt to access it. I have had this working previously but it's driving me daft this time. Suggestions very welcome.

I believe this is the same issue I faced awhile back. The solution that worked for me was to enter the MS account password credentials for the computer I was trying to access, not my own credentials. Example; on my computer, to access my wife's computer I enter :
User name "Wife@hotmail.com"
Password "WifePassword"
The other settings you listed are correct and need to be as you have them.

I don''t use PINs for anything on my network. It may be the password for the remote PC I'll try that

The bad thing here is that I've been starting windows to automatically load the logon password, I don't remember any of them. Thought I had them written down but I guess I didn't.

How do I find my Microsoft password without resetting it?

Try using the “Forgot Password” feature on the sign-in screen. Just follow the prompts and verify your identity with email or phone number, and reset your password without changing it. Or, check saved login credentials on devices you've used before. Explore settings and locate the accounts/passwords section.

Just to be clear, I am referring to how you log into a computer, not for networking.

If you use Windows Hello (Pin login to boot into Windows) I was suggesting you disable that and use your password. Then try again from a remote PC

Pin (Windows Hello) logins have been causing remote connection issues.

I don't use a PIN to log onto my PC's none of them. I just tried changing the password on a PC. Went to another and tried to map a drive. Now I'm getting a message"The mapped network drive cannot be created due to this error. The referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to" I figure I'm getting this message due to too may attempts to map the drive. How can I get past this?

Getting closer to an answer.

I am not sure about the lockout. Does it inform you how long you must wait until attempting to be able to login again with a password?

There is no waiting time given. It seems to not have a timeout. I've been getting this error ever since I've tried different passwords. I always get the weird stuff.

Duck? lol That's what my friends call(ed) me. As far as the locked PC, I'm probably going to have to reinstall Windows. I can't get Administrator enabled. Drat! No easy way to unlocked the darn thing.

I’m not the one to help with forgotten passwords. But I would be surprised if there isn’t an easier way.

It depends. If its a microsoft account your screwed if the reset password option does not work (you don't have any backup number or anything on file.) If it was a local account you have options:

This might of helped if my problem was a"password reset", which it isn't. It's about a "lockout issue" with other PC's on the same network.
