I think this is an app - I have made Chrome the browser default in the apps/settings menu. Edge still comes up for the widget content. Can it be eliminated?! Thanks.

Per MS quote-"Because Windows supports applications that rely on the web platform, our default web browser is an essential component of our operating system and can’t be uninstalled."
I believe certain MS apps that access the web will use Edge and only Edge. It is the way MS designs them. Widgets are just one of them. I know any app that relies on location does (such as weather). I also believe Edge is integral to windows updates. Back in the day IE was so I would expect Edge to be as well.

Correct, anything web related that MS provides will open Edge and ignore your default browser.
One of the things I uninstall on Win 11 for my clients is Widgets. To me it is useless bloat.

Good ol Widgets in Windows is one of Microsoft's most dopey 'features' they've ever put into the OS.
I've used every consumer version of Windows since the venerable version 3.1 and widgets is developers brain fade at work.

Change the Widgets switch to Off

I think it is also possible to uninstall it completely?

I think you can't uninstall them, but under settings -> personalization -> taskbar -> taskbar items you can disable them.
