With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand.
The updated PS5 RRPs are effective starting April 14, as follows*:

In New Zealand where I'm from some of the leading retailers today are still selling PS5's on special (Noel Leeming and Mighty Ape). Any Kiwis out there better be in quick if you want one. I'm ok as I bought an XBOX Series X a month ago.

Some of these prices are just intended to rip off customers - usually with some B/S over "Currency fluctuations" !!!!. AFAIK as @BrianInEngland points out the UK has a trade deal with Japan of 0% tariff's -- as does the EU Single market members that includes the EEA. With the UK £ and the EU's € appreciating rapidly against other world currencies - including the japanese Yen prices should be DECREASING not increasing.
Component prices probably play a good portion of the extra costs for manufacturing. They said “high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates“ they didn’t specify in what context.
