Equivalent to Windows Portable apps these applimage apps can be installed and run without having to use a package manager and whatevr. Simply download the imge and run it from your desired directory.Works a treat. I couldn't get VLC to play HEVX H265 etc codecs from "Official distros" but tried the applimage and it worked perfectly.
