Solved Power supply made a poping sound and now the computer is dead

Hi,
Last night I switched my power supply and it made a pop sound so I for some reason repeated these steps 2 more times and each time the psu made a poping sound and now my computer is dead. I figured I'd get a replacement but I would like to have some help figuring out what even caused the popping sound anyways so I can prevent this from happening.

I've had the power supply less then a year and judging by the manual for the motherboard I have all the connections to the motherboard seated correctly. I did notice for a couple months I'd hear a chime like sound that happened for a split second and would go away that happened at random times.

There's a strong burnt smell coming from my power supply

The power supply is a EVGA 750 BQ 80 Plus Bronze PSU and the computer specs is the 2nd system which is listed on my system specs of 11forum(this forum)

Most probably the popping sound was a capacitor blowing or an arc. Probably an arc since it happened more than once.
The only thing you can really do to prevent things like that, is keep the power supply dust free and buy a better power supply.

Skimp on anything else except a power supply.

That doesnt smell good. Another psu is the the way to go. Are you sure you need 750w ?

I don't want to alarm anyone unnecessarily, but it's not unusual for a PSU to take out other components when it fails.

I used a backup power supply and my computer posted so it was just the power supply this time anyway.

That's great news.

As regards whether you should use a lesser PSU, I'd say not. The calculator at Newegg suggests 500-599W. You may not need 750W, but it's not grossly excessive.

If it pops every time you hit the power switch, my guess is that a circuit breaker is tripping. It really doesn't matter what the popping sound is, You need to stop trying to start your computer until you have replaced the power supply.

So you just need to get a better psu. A respectable brand 600w gold or something that ballpark. I like the bequiet psu but they are not cheap.

That thermlatake is ok for testing or as a stop gap. I would get something a bit better. This is the 430w thermaltake 80+white reviewed

That power supply is supposed to be under warranty for 5 years. Send EVGA an email for replacement. I hope you still have your original receipt.

EVGA is a trusted brand. My Bronze EVGA is still working for 7 years now without a hiccup. Just try to get EVGA's attention to correct the issue.

There are only a few companies that actually make power supplies.
Companies like Corsair and EVGA don't make power supplies, they just buy and rebrand them.

Two of the better power supply makers are Seasonic and Super Flower. CWT is fairly decent as well.
Stay away from companies like... HEC.

Here's a website that keeps track of who actually makes the power supplies.
Click on the name of the company selling them and then check the model number to find the actual manufacturer...

EVGA stands behind their products. I wouldn't call them a cheapo power supply. Hit them up, I'm sure they will replace it.

My preferred brand of PSU is Seasonic. 10 year warranties. Never had an issue.

Seasonic or EVGA are definitely the preferred power supplies in my systems. They cost a bit more, but are top notch as far as I am concerned.
