Problems Registering or changing Password on various Internet sites

First post. I have a new Dell XPS 8960 desktop with Windows 11. My old machine was a Dell XPS 8500 desktop with Windows 10. At present I am running them side by side until I get all the problems ironed out with the new one. On the 8960 I have had several problems either Registering or changing the Password on some sites, but not on the 8500 !! A couple of issues were resolved by disabling the Ad Blocker, or creating an account on my Mobile and then logging in on the PC. Facebook was a complete nightmare and yet I have been logged in on the 8500 for years. Has anyone encountered similar problems? I would welcome any suggestions. My technical support skills are a bit rusty, (I'm 78), so please be gentle with me !! Thank you :-)

Hi Antspants. I prefer Chrome, that's what I'm used to. I haven't tried with other browsers. Any suggestions? Any help gratefully received. :-) Oh - and they're desktops, not laptops. I need a big screen a mouse and a proper keyboard !!that's what I've used for 60 years.

First I would check the cookie settings in the Chrome settings page.
I would also try Microsoft Edge (Only because it’s already installed) on the 8960 to see if the same problem occurs.

In Chrome
  1. Open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click the 3 dots> More > Settings
  3. Click Privacy and security

Nope. Allowed on both machines. Ah - hang on - I assumed because I hadn't checked that they were allowed. But again the settings are the the same on both machines. However - I've just checked allow on the old machine, so now they're allowed on the new. I wonder if that's it?

Strange.

Is there a site you can try registering at or logging into that you couldn’t log into with the 8960 using Chrome, instead using Edge?

Also, in Chrome (sorry) I am not sure if these settings are still available but check the following:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. At the top right (3 dots) click More> Settings.
  3. Click Privacy and security> Site settings.
  4. Click Additional content settings> On-device site data.
  5. Select a default behaviour. Allow.

What you are experiencing is normal and has to do with security. Depending on the security measures a site has in place, many (but not all) sites that require a user name and login recognize that you are using a new device and/or new browser and will refuse to log you in until you verify that it is actually you logging in. It can cause havoc for a user if he has not set up a 2 step verification method within his account settings for that site. Two step verification consists of an alternate email address and/or telephone number that can receive text messages.

Even if you have your browser data syncing between computers, it does not get around 2 step verification(2FA). Some sites might send a link to your registered email but most require the alternate email address. By far the best and easiest method of verifying your're you is a cell phone. The site sends a code to the phone, You enter that code when it asks for it on the signin screen, and away you go. You only have to do this once per device and/or browser.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

Detailed and very informative. Thank you. I tried that with Facebook on the PC about 6 times, but never got a message sent my phone, they have got the number, and it's correct because I checked it on my old PC. Once I accessed Facebook on my phone - which I'd never done before, they sent the verification on WhatsApp, which was great - I've used that for years. Once I was on Facebook on my phone it worked on the new desktop - can't work that one out at all. On my old PC I never log out, so never had to log in again because I had no idea what the Password was. That's when I had the problem on the new one, it wouldn't accept the password change. The screen just froze. That's about the best I can tell you. Just can't work out what's happening.
