Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2017 running on new Windows 11 computer

Hello, first timer here. Quick background; I have a new Lenovo P1 Gen 7 ThinkPad running Windows 11 version 24H2, OS build 26100.3037, and am in the process of migrating all my data and re-installing programs from my old Windows 10 Dell Precision 5510. I'm old and retired (but not a complete luddite), used to have a business, and I use my old copy of Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2017 for my personal bookkeeping. I want to use a program that allows double entry accounting and that's why I continue to use Quickbooks, plus my CPA uses my Quickbooks file when doing my taxes. Back in 2022, I think, Intuit did away with standalone and went to a strictly subscription model. Now, the cheapest plan is $420 per year. The last standalone version, which was designed to work on Windows 11 sells for $1500+ on ebay. I read online that my 2017 version is only certified to work on Windows 10 and might or might not run on my Windows 11 machine. I installed it yesterday and so far, works perfectly. This program is perfectly adequate for my needs and I absolutely do not need the features of the latest subscription versions of Quickbooks and spending $400-$500 per year for the program for my personal bookkeeping is a non-starter. I know there are some open-source double entry accounting systems out there like GnuCash, but the integration with my CPA's system is critical for me. And I only use the program on my local computer and do not have any interaction with the internet when using it so the lack of security updates is not an issue.

So, even though it's working fine now, I'm guessing that a future Windows 11 update could render my Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2017 unusable and I'd like to prolong its usability as long as possible. Here's my question: this version of Quickbooks was also designed to run on Windows 8 so would running it on my Windows 11 machine in Windows 8 Compatibility Mode hypothetically allow me to keep using it for the foreseeable future if a Windows 11 update kills it? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. If it's working now, I would leave it alone. I wouldn't do anything out of speculation of what MIGHT happen. If by chance an update ever breaks it, THEN you can try it in compatibility mode.

All the programs I have had on Win10 have worked on Win11. I haven't used QB since 2020 when I quit being treasurer for our church but version 19 was working on Win10 at that time. They now are using the subscription version, I don't need that. I might try MS Money Sunset that's downloadable but not sure it can import from QB or Quicken. I had an idea to try Peachtree Accounting but that's now SAGE 50. If it's only a simple checkbook needed one can find a Register template online for Excel, maybe Microsoft Office site, it should also work with Quattro Pro, Lotus 1-2-3, LibreOffice Calc, etc.

I am transitioning from Sage 50 to Quick Books myself.
I don't like subscription software so I looked around.
I don't like the idea that they hold my data in ransom for a grand.
I found Quick Books Pro 2024 Desktop version on Amazon.
Amazon lol of course
Intuit does not sell the stand alone version any more. They only sell the subscription version now and thats all they will support.
But third party retailers do still sell the stand alone version.
I bought it, downloaded it from the Intuit site, got it registered and activated and I am on my way.
And yes I have seen that somewhere that running older versions in W8 compatibility mode works so you should be just fine.

sdtag, I had no idea that a Quickbooks Pro 2024 Desktop version was available. When I read your post I immediately went to Amazon and saw the 2024 Desktop versions you were talking about. So I guess the only gamble is that the license key will indeed work in perpetuity, correct? Do you know if the license key is legitimate or is it a crack? Thanks for the info.

If this is the correct listing Amazon.com

Quickbooks will not validate these license codes since they are sold from a third party. We verified this with Quickbooks customer service as well.

Sellers are nice people, but this item is not registerable which means no support for it. QB will not recognize the license number, since it is purchased through a third party, and thus QB will not allow it registered. Too bad.
I would stay far, far away from such a seller and product and keep my $400 in my pocket.

FWIW I still use the last UK version of Microsoft Money 2005 which is now 20 years old and works fine in Windows 11 24H2.

yes that is correct. Quickbooks will not support any software other than their on line versions. Thats what they sell now. But third party resellers can and do still sell different versions of Quickbooks. So I don't get support, I don't want it or need it anyway, but I was able to download, register, and activate it and I am using QuickBooks Pro 2024 desktop version that I just bought on Amazon a few days ago.
I'm sorry if you don't believe me but it works for me.
It was 500 not 400. Well worth it. imho

I was able to go to the intuit web site and download the software. The seller on Amazon provided a link and then the codes. Register, activate, and something else. It all worked flawlessly and I am using Quickbooks 2024 desktop version now. I hate subscription software thats why I went looking.
So no, its not a crack or a hack, it is legitimate.
I'm not a very good accountant so I have an accountant that reconciles my books for me every quarter and pays my sales taxes. I showed him the deal on Amazon before I bought it and he said it would work. So I bought it.
