Right click on some items either gives no context menu or even freezes File Explorer.

Hi!

I'm having this weird issue. I searched this forum and found a similar case but with no solution given, so I'll try my luck here.

Issue:
  • right clicking some items pinned in Start doesn't give any context menu. For instance File Explorer and Edge don't give a context menu, while Settings does.
  • also in Start, if I click on "All" to see the list of installed apps, Store Apps give the context menu but "Pin to Start" doesn't work. While Desktop Apps give no context menu.
  • Search remembers the apps I searched, like RegEdit, CMD, MSConfig, and I always had a context menu when right clicking them, and could start them as an admin, but now no more.
  • right clicking on ANY item in "Windows Tools" (= Computer Management, Defragment and Optimize etc) I get a "loading" circle and the window freezes and it's not possible to close it from the X on the top right corner (it does close if I right click on Windows Tools on the taskbar and select "Close Window").
  • Same thing with circle and freeze happens if I right click on some .exe in C (as far as I could observe it only happens with exe and only in C). It's selective though. For instance, if I go in Program Files and open the 7-Zip folder, a right click on 7z.exe or 7zG.exe gives the context menu, but right clicking on 7zFM.exe gives circle and freeze.
In the LibreOffice folder right clicking on any exe like Writer, Base, Math etc freezes the window, but things like python.exe correctly give the context menu.
Same thing happens for some exe in the Program Files (x86) and Windows folders. For instance in Windows folder the regedit exe freezes the window, whereas the explorer and notebook exe give the context menu.
It's quite annoying and I really can't make sense of it.
I am unsure when this started.
As for Third-Party apps which directly affect File Explorer I can only think of ExplorerPatcher and WinSetView.
I have uninstalled EP, at first from its own uninstall option in its settings. Nothing changed so I reinstalled it and noticed that it remembered all settings, so I supposed that the uninstallation didn't revert something which maybe is the cause of this issue, and I tried uninstalling with Revo and deleting all the leftovers, but to no avail. It either is not the cause of the issue or it permanently changed something and neither its own uninstaller nor Revo are able to revert it.
As for WinSetView, @LesFerch might have something to say if he's aware of his utility being related to such an issue. I can only say that I've tried submitting "revert views to windows defaults" and selecting "reset Explorer options" but besides loosing the customization and having again the annoying grouping etc, the issue with the right click persists.

I can't think of anything that might be the cause.
Can you?

I also tried this:
- I started in Safe Mode (minimal) and the issue was still there.
- SFC run via PS didn't find any violation. Run via the System File Checker in Revo it did find issues and corrected them but the right click thing persists.
- DISM RestoreHealth didn't solve anything.
- deleting the thumbnails cache and temp files with Disk Cleaner AND with Revo didn't solve anything.
- changed a special character in my username: from xyz³ to xyz3 in user accounts in control panel. Now in the Start I can see xyz3 but the folder in C Users is still called xyz³ and when I open PS it says PS C:\Users\xyz³>.
If you think that this ³ might be the issue, can you tell me how to change all what remains of xyz³ into xyz3?
- I downloaded ShellExView and saw that the only stuff not from Microsoft was 7z and LibreOffice. I still tried disabling those but nothing changed.
- I downloaded and installed the latest Administrative Templates for Win 11 24H2 (they install in a different folder so I copied them to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\. I had to take ownership of this folder first, and then I reverted the ownership to Trustedinstaller with a command line in PS)

The only thing that works: creating another account. I did that and the right click works perfectly there.
So I suspect corrupt user files and I've no idea how to fix it.
I'd prefer to fix than to move all to the new account and delete this one, because some things aren't installed for all users and I never did this and feel unsure about it.

Do you have a fix for this?
System Restore is not an option, I forgot it disabled 😬

Thnx

Have you tried clean-boot?

I've tried Safe Mode minimal. I didn't feel that clean boot would offer anything more than this. Do you feel it would?
Also, I've tried creating another account and in the other account this issue isn't present.
I'm no expert so this doesn't tell me much, I only suppose that it could mean that there's corruption in my user's files.
But maybe it tells more to you?

And you would be thinking right. By the way, Thank you for giving information on your troubleshooting thus far. You have been very thorough.
I can tell you the proper way to fix it as to not encounter any file permission problems, but I have a couple of questions.

Do you use a MS account with your personal folders syncing to Onedrive or do you use a local account?
If you use a local account, are your personal folders on your system drive or have you moved them to a secondary storage drive?

Edited: As was suggested, Doing a quick clean boot from you regular user account is a good idea. That would eliminate it being a software conflict.

please do :)
If you use a local account, are your personal folders on your system drive or have you moved them to a secondary storage drive?
All personal stuff (including the "official" system's Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures and Videos folders) are in other partitions. C only has the OS and the programs/apps.
Doing a quick clean boot from you regular user account is a good idea. That would eliminate it being a software conflict.
What would that offer more than starting in Safe Mode Minimal?
And would it solve the issue or narrow the cause?
Does it still need to be narrowed down once it's known that Safe Mode still has the issue while a new account doesn't?
It's a real question, as in "I have no f... idea so I'm asking" :)

IF... you don't see the problem after a clean boot, then you can add things back slowly until the problem re-appears.
Then you'll know what's causing the problem.

Generally, when adding things back... use the half-split method.
For example... add half the items back and then reboot. See if you have the problem or not.
No problem... then you know that half is OK
Problem... then you know that half HAS the problem.

Keep rinsing and repeating, working with half the remaining items... etc.

Whichever half had the problem initially... keep splitting that half into halfs, until you isolate the cause.
Always split the half that has the problem, then repeat with the new half that has the problem.

Which context menu is set as the default for your account? That is, do you have the modern Windows 11 context menu or have you switched to the classic context menu? WinSetView has an option to switch the context menu (and the "classic" option is checked by default) but it uses the same registry setting everybody else uses, including the tutorial here:

I'm guessing your test account, where everything works correctly, has the modern Windows 11 context menu. Is that correct?

Sure but I was wondering if Safe Mode Minimal doesn't already disable ALL what Clean Boot disables. I really don't know, I'm guessing.
But if it's so, and as I tried Safe Mode Minimal and the issue was still present, shouldn't we assume that it does not come from something that could be disabled and therefore narrowed-down with Clean Boot?

I use the classic context menu and whoever invented the new one should get his/her hands eaten by his/her cat because it's a disgrace and a shame and a complete nonsense which has no place whatsoever in the history of IT and should be forgotten forever and ever amen 😁

Yes that's correct. Or wait. Let me check.
Yes, it's correct.
Though, enabling the modern disgusting context menu with
Code:
reg.exe delete "HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}" /f
doesn't solve the issue.
I'm so sad, now I have the horrible modern context menu and none of the customizations done with WinSetView, but still the issue.
Life is unfair.

I'd guess that enabling the classic context menu for the test account does not introduce the issue. You might as well give that a try to be sure.

If that's correct, I would suspect the issue is caused by an app, that adds a shell extension, that's installed for your account, but not the test account. Except that you already disabled all non-Microsoft extensions and still have the issue, so I'm at a loss.

I'm sure WinSetView has nothing to do with the issue. To be sure, you can run WinSetView on the test account and see if everything is still OK.

If this happened to me I would probably spend a few hours trying to find the important difference between the good and bad user profiles, but would likely have to throw in the towel and migrate to the new account.

There's a difference.
In Safe Mode it's all or nothing.

With Clean Boot, you can gradually add things back until you find the one that's causing the problem.

I still fail to understand. If Safe Mode disables all, it means that if the problem comes from a third-party app the issue will not be present in safe mode, right?
In my case the issue WAS present in safe mode, which correct me if I am wrong hints that the issue does not come from a third-party app and it's therefore not to be found by using clean boot.
Or what am I missing there?

I still fail to understand. If Safe Mode disables all, it means that if the problem comes from a third-party app the issue will not be present in safe mode, right?
In my case the issue WAS present in safe mode, which correct me if I am wrong hints that the issue does not come from a third-party app and it's therefore not to be found by using clean boot.
Or what am I missing there?

On a clean boot you can also disable Microsoft items.

Your other option ofc is to just use the new account you created, and delete the other one.
Just make sure the new account has Admin privileges.
