run batch file when windows is shutting down

I put down a batch file under the shutdown section in windows under gpedit but it doesn't seem to be executed, when i press the power button ,so windows is shutting down.

is there another way for this ? or does windows now really shutdown with i press the power button ? (even though i do see it shutting down)

I have not researched this at all, but I'm thinking that maybe another approach might be more appropriate.

As an example, how about simply modifying your batch file to have it perform the shutdown as the last operation? In other words, rather than pressing the power button, simply run your batch file. As the last thing that it does, it would then perform the shutdown.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

thats the thing.
it's inside a Cab machine, so there is no mouse / keyboard.. only a power button (soft button) to turn it on , and turn it off)

My thought is that pressing the Off button is stopping processes, sometimes fast and sometimes slow with the slowness being caused by orderly closing of processes. How those processes are listed in the start and stop will determine if something runs before other things.

There's a possibility your script is non-blocking, meaning it starts an app or command which runs in the background, before exiting. The shutdown policy is watching for the parent script to exit, and ignoring if any background tasks have completed.

Can you share what's in the script? If not, another way to check it's working is to run a simple command like:
(date /t && time /t)> C:\path\folder\log.txt

This should log the time/date into a file, so you can confirm the GPO actually executed the script.

One other thing to consider: Have you verified that your system is indeed configured to perform a shutdown when the power button is pressed and not a sleep or hibernate operation?

Check Control Panel > Power options > Choose what the power button does.

Sorry, just thought of one more thing...

Also in the Power options section, try turning off (uncheck) the option called "Turn on fast startup". That setting has a tendency to interfere with multiple different things.
