Devices Run Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to manually run the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to check for memory problems in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool can help you identify and diagnose problems with system memory (RAM) when you suspect your PC has a memory problem that isn’t being automatically detected.


You must be signed in as an administrator to run the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool.

If your PC crashes because of failing memory, and Windows Memory Diagnostics automatically detected it, you will be automatically prompted to schedule a memory test the next time the computer is restarted.




Here's How:

1 Open Windows Memory Diagnostic (MdSched.exe).

2 Click/tap on Restart now and check for problems when ready to restart the computer. (see screenshot below)

3 The computer will now restart to run the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool. (see screenshot below)

As the memory test is running, you will see the current status for any detected problems.

4 By default, the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool will run a standard test mix, use the default cache setting of each test, and use a pass count of 2 for the total number of times the entire test mix will repeat.

If you would like to change any of these default test settings, press the F1 key, use the Tab key to select which setting (Test mix, Cache, or Pass count) you want to change, change the setting to what you want, and press F10 when finished with your changes to apply them. (see screenshots below)

When you press F10 to apply your changes, Windows Memory Diagnostics will start over running the test based on your settings.

5 When memory testing has completed, the computer will automatically restart to Windows.

6 After you sign in to Windows, you should see the Windows Memory Diagnostic test results as a notification after a few minutes. (see screenshot below)

If the Windows Memory Diagnostics test results do not show as a notification for you, then you can see them in Event Viewer.

Hiyya Shawn mate I have run the Windows memory diagnostics tool three times now and am not getting either the small black readout or anything in the Event Viewer/Windows Logs/System/Find - the results and I am wondering if I am doing something wrong? Someone asked if I had Bitlocker turned on but I don't have it on. Any suggestions please?

Did you run MdSched.exe from within Windows and not while in Safe Mode?

Do you have any 3rd party security software installed that may have blocked writing the log?

Hello Shawn mate I just ran the MdSched.exe again and still am getting no results either in a screen message or searching the Events Viewer for same. Am not in safe mode and to be honest I would have to look up how to get into safe mode. I am running ESET Smart Security as my preferred security suite and am not sure if it is blocking the results after running the memory test. I am not really that sure on how to check to see if ESET is blocking this function's results. I have run a full scan for malware with ESET and SuperAntiSpyware and they come up with no problems except for a few PUP's . So it remains a mystery as to why the test results are not to be found. Having said that I did watch the progress of the memory scan as it ran and towards the end it reported nil problems right up until 95% of the number 2 RAM set.

I'm not sure why it's not logging anything. It is odd.

Usually if you have any memory issues, you'll get errors soon after starting the test.

My system doesn't even start the test. After a period of time, I give up and press F1. I get a blank blue screen (no options) and the system eventually reboots. No notifications either.

You could test using MemTest86 or Memtest86+.

Ok Shawn seems to be a glitch in my system which was originally Windows 10 Pro which I upgraded to Windows 11 Pro some time ago. Anyway as I said it said there were no issues just before the test ended but thanks for your help if I get any suspicion that there is a problem I'll run the Memtest86 .
But thanks again for your help you are always there when I have a problem.
