Be sure to put it in the M.2_1 slot (PCI-E 4.0). It's a fast M.2 drive, and wouldn't run at full speed in M.2_2 (PCI-E 3.0).

Image or clone?
You will be able to clone the old SATA drive directly to the new M.2 drive. Macrium Reflect can resize the partitions to use the full space of the M.2 drive.
Samsung's cloning software was quite easy to use as well, when I last tried it. (Free download.)

The old drive is an ssd drive but, I assume that will work too. Does Macrium take care of the partition work when cloning also? That might be the best way would be to clone? I used the Samsung but it's been a while.

Reflect handles the partitions. In particular, it resized the primary partition automatically to use the space on the larger drive.
It has been a while since I used Samsung's cloning software, but I cloned a 1TB SATA HDD to a 500GB SATA SSD. (The HDD had much less than 1TB on it.)
Don't worry.
