Hi folks
particularly @TraderGary

With Hargreaves Lansdown going into all sorts of murky areas any other decent trading platform that runs particularly on Firefox or even native but on W11. I'm primarily interested in Options and EOD stuff and when placing a trade I like the facility to expire at close if it's not executed before then. I do a certain amount of day trading (have level 2 data) but just every so often -- not a pro by any manner at all - it's more (usually) a profitable hobby.

I've 4 screens available for this too.

US, European and UK markets are the only one's I deal with. I've got all the US Federal paperwork for US trading e.g Federal IRS Witholding tax exemption for non US residents / citizens etc so a 100% US platform is fine by me if it's suitable and can trade in the areas I'm interested in. Sometimes but rarely I short stuff but that's not a facility that I must have.

Cheers
jimbo

I've traded with Interactive Brokers for many years. IB is one of the largest, fastest, and most reliable brokers out there. I mostly day trade for $1 USD per trade. I've fully customized their Trader Workstation trading platform for the way I work. I used to have a multi monitor setup, but today I trade entirely on only my laptop.

Hi there

@TraderGary

Thanks for the swift response.

Will give them a look. I did look at A.J Bell but one prob is that you don't actually "Own the shares" you buy - it seems they are like an "Intemediary" which might be fine for many but I'm suspicious of that model. I like the idea that you can move away also from the multi monitor model too. E.G for Hargreaves Lansdown :

If you hold your shares in an HL account, you will not have a share certificate. Your shares are held safely on your behalf by Hargreaves Lansdown Nominees Limited.

I 'm suspicious of that type of thing even if it is supposedly 100% safe, (As was the Titanic mean't to be Unsinkable !!).

Will investigate I.B next week -- Thanks again.

Cheers

It is called a nominee account, all online trading platforms use it.

An investor's shares are legally owned by a stockbroker's non-trading subsidiary or nominee company. The investor is the stock's beneficial owner and has rights over the shares. The stockbroker records all beneficial owners, trades according to an investor's directions, and passes cash from sales or dividends to an investor.

Because a non-trading company owns the shares, an investor's assets are legally separate from the stockbroker's assets and liabilities. If the broker becomes insolvent, the investor's stocks are protected from creditors.

If you stick with the big name brokers then you should be completely safe with a nominee account.

In the 15+ years I've been investing I only know of two examples of a broker going under, one more reputable than the other. For one (Fysh Horton Finney, 2013) the nominee held shares were successfully returned to the investors. The other (Pacific Continental Securities, 2009) was one of the more 'dubious' brokers that was closed down by the FSA in 2007. Both stories here:
