Strange new pop-up appearing

Good evening
For the first time in perhaps 15 years, I find I have picked up a pop-up. No complaints from Defender so far.
This arrived on my system after I visited a friend's website.
Not being an expert though not too bad with computers despite my near 80 years of trips around the sun!
Would appreciate some advice, any advice, please.

I would download this: AdwCleaner 2023 - Free Adware Cleaner & Removal Tool | Malwarebytes and run it.

Probably a good thing to call an offline scan after you clear all cookies and other cached garbage in your IE browser.

This is a browser pop-up. Don't fall for it.
Do you only see it while the browser(edge) is active?
It's an ad made to look like a virus, I bet you don't even have McAfee installed.

John, downloaded Malwarebytes. Nothing to report other than the pop-up actually popped up during the scan!
Is the link correct in that there's just one program - Malwarebytes? Asking because I saw no mention of AdwCleaner 2023!

You're right, no McAfee. The pop-up just popped up again in another form!

Do what @OAT suggests (clear your cookies). He knows more about this than I do. AdwCleaner is part of Malwarebytes. It would be worth checking for rootkits in that program too (it isn't selected by default).

Thanks - cleared Edge cache/cookies etc. I was going to run Defender again although it reportd clean originally. Noticed that Malwarebytes has now taken charge of the Defender tasks.
Meanwhile the pop-up continues!

EDITED TO SAY : Unable to ocate any settings to check rootkits in ADWCleaner.

Are you sure Edge closed all the way?
I would do a reboot of the system to be sure.
Malwarebytes has taken over security duties. Just uninstall it and it will restore Defender.

Ah, found the rootkit setting in Malwarebytes, run the program once again and still reported clean. Weirdly, the rogue pop-up isn't popping-up! I wonder if it has gone although nothing has been reported.

I shall continue keeping an eye out for it!

That is a website notification, not an actual infection. Which is a common scam/trick.

Go into your browsers and check the notifications for websites.

In chrome, you can do this by following these directions:

Once you remove the simple-mnst-check.azurewebsites.net from the notifications section (referenced in the screenshot) and anything else you don't want, you will be fine.

I would recommend just simply turning off website notifications altogether in the browser.

I would also recommend using malwarebytes in addition to defender, by turning off the setting in malwarebytes to register in the security center found under the malwarebytes settings.

Edit: Closing the browser is not enough, you will get the notifications again unless you remove them from the browser notification setting.

As others have said, it's not a virus, it's a website pop-up made to look like a virus. If it happens again, close Edge in the Task Manager. You can scan for viruses all day, but you probably will find nothing like what's been happening.
