Solved System Restore?

Hi,

I turned it off on all my partitions, but yesterday saw it running on active C, disabled it (deleting all restore points approx. 10 GB in size) and now found it turned ON again, only on the active C.

What am I doing incorrect?

Is it linked to some W11 service that requires to be disabled too?

Sometimes other programs "try" to set a Restore point, before you perform some action.
I think some of these programs can re-enable System Restore.

I always turn mine OFF on all drives. But I noticed sometime in August, that it was turned back on.
I just turned it off and it stayed off so far.

I don't see anything is Services that "obviously" has to do with System Restore.




On a side note, I did see this in Services... P9RdrService_94560
Description: Enables trigger-starting plan9 file servers.

Cracked me up. There is an old sci-fi "B"movie called Plan 9 from Outer Space.
I think someone at MS has a sense of humor. :-)

Thanks for explaining, I assumed it was like W7 . Was checking properties of C this am. and witnessed a size increase by approx. +1.2 GB, checked and saw it running on C.

Thought may be linked to a service.

That's how I found out mine was back on. C:\ - properties.

I dunno. I don't think so. But a reboot never hurts anything. :-)







This might be the reason... do you have this UN-checked?

A lot of times... when you notice something weird happening in Windows...
check the options or preferences in 3rd party programs.

In fact, it's always a good idea to check the Options or Preferences of any 3rd party program,
right after install and before first use.



I know that sometimes we're in too much of a hurry to do that... but it prevents a LOT of problems down the road.

On the System Restore page...
click on Configure and make sure you "also" set the allowed space for Restore Points... as small as you can.

I, too, keep system restore off, but twice lately I have found it had automatically been turned back on. If you have PRO I found that disabling it in group policy stops it from happening.
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\System Restore
Enable policy for "Turn Off System Restore".

The REG file in Option 3... ?

I just checked my Registry... the items in the REG patch are already in place on my comp.
I have no idea what SET them that way.
Might have been the settings we already talked about... or the REG patch?

Do you use CCleaner? The latest version has a bug that will do that.

If so, delete or rename its CCleanerDU.dll file(s). The bug is in these Driver Update .dlls, CCleaner works fine without them.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

@Ghot Just yesterday, I was thinking the exact same thing while setting up a new PC for a friend, going through the list of .bat and regedit stuff I had kept.
I'm not proficient enough with .bat files to do it.
