I JUST NOW noticed that Windows Explorer is tabbed, like a browser, so I don't have to keep hitting Win+E every time I need an additional window up. When did this happen?!?!?

Depends on what version of Windows you're running.
It happened just recently for the Insider channel, I believe.

<--------------------------
For the rest of us, it's supposed to happen in a couple weeks.

If it's natively built in, you are on an insider channel.

If you used the ViveTool, you took additional steps to make it work today with the non insider channel release (but if you took these steps, you would know it and wouldn't be surprised it's there).

For those on the standard release, this functionality is coming in an October update.

I'm a heavy tab user. Who else finds Tabbed File Explorer to be very slow and sluggish with multiple tabs open?

In comparison, I can have multiple tabs open in Directory Opus, and not notice any performance problems with it. Same with other tabbed file managers that I've used over the years.

Not if MS decided to put you on the B list. It took a few Dev builds before I got tabbed File Explorer.

Haven't noticed that as much as it takes a second or two longer to load the first tab. And I get a few more "Not Responding" when copying large files than I'd expect.

Hey - here's a question.

I haven't used a mouse in, like, 15 years - laptop only - so I use keyboard shortcuts whenever possible.

The Win-key shortcuts to bop through my pinned apps gets heavy use.

I never pinned Explorer because, Why? Win-E opens it right up.

But now I've noticed that Win-E opens a NEW Explorer window, instead of bringing the existing Window to the top. (For comparison, when I use Win-2 to open my browser, if I have an active session, it jumps to that session rather than starting a new one...)

I have ten pinned apps, so when Explorer opens it's at least in the eleventh position, which means I can't use Win-#.

Short of pinning it in slot 1-10, is there an option to force Win-E to activate the existing Explorer window, rather than launching a new one?

I'm not an insider. It was an update in Windows Update for me in Oct. But there are bugs. Many bugs.
huh - it works fine but could do with some design improvements. I am not aware of any specific bugs?

I do not think this is possible.

Even if you right click on the shortcut, it opens a new window rather than a new tab.

One major limitation on FE tabs is that you cannot drag a tab to move to a new instance as you can with Edge (or combine multiple windows).

Better still, the ability to tile the tabs would be good (a long lost and sadly missed feature we had 2 decades ago with File Manager LOL).

I guess all this is work in progress, and all I can suggest you do is use feedback hub.

My File Explorer intermittently stops responding. I can't open folders. I have to click on the OneDrive running in the system tray. Then I go back to the File Manager and it works a few times. File Explorer is sometimes a grey title bar and sometimes a paler colour of my chosen accent colour. Various files are blocked from saving to OneDrive folder which were no issue previous, Device Security is suddenly not supported today, programs keep asking for permissions..... I did a factory reset. Some issues resolved, new one occurred. MS Support remote connected, initiated ISO install, its stuck and won't install. Needed to hit F8 start windows normally and tribg another reset myself.

I wouldn't even know how to explain it in the Feedback Hub so that they'd understand...

Right. But if you're in another program and you want to jump BACK to Explorer, and you hit Win+E, it launches a new instance rather than just taking the focus of the existing instance.
