Thoughts on Windows 11

Screaming? Oh.. the people that provide feed back are screaming for it?

Yes, some want those features back but how many out of all of the Win 11 user base really want them back? I know I never used them before and would never use them in the future and I suspect many others don't want them. Win 11 is a business driven version of the OS and they want it so they don't have employees customizing their workstations making general maintenance harder and more costly.

While customization is nice MS isn't going to add or bring those features back in the near future.

Probably the majority of lemmings .. ehh.. users will just take W11 as it comes out of the box. Either because they don't know how to customize it or they don't care.

(I personally don't belong to that group)

Win 11 has been offered but I selected 'Stay on Windows 10 for now". I have 'Winaero Tweaker' installed on my Win 10 machines and I am wondering if anyone has tried it on Windows 11. I am considering upgrading to Win 11 but does 'Winaero Tweaker' have any tweaks that fix some of the negative comments I am reading about Windows 11 on this thread?

I have it installed, has small section specific for Win11 not used any though.

Full list of functions - at present, but winaero have a regular update policy ...

Since Windows 95 I've been comfortable with a Taskbar at the bottom and never felt a need to move it anywhere else. I'm rather getting to like having icons centred, allows me to put my most used ones dead centre of the screen and easy to find.

What I'm really missing, as it seriously impacts my workflow, is the ability to drag a bunch of files from Explorer and drop them onto the icon of a running app on the taskbar to open them. This is a feature that has been available in every Taskbar since XP. For a single file, or maybe a couple it's not too much of a pain opening them individually. But my typical use for this would be to grab some 20 or more image files and drop them into my photo editing software.

I have tried the taskbar in different locations , mostly so i could help out others when they wanted to move things around - I never saw any advantage so it's back where it belongs

As for dragging to program icons on the taskbar, I'd forgotten that the option existed , I assume the program has to have an internal coding to handle the option - I just tried dragging an image to Lightroom classic icon on taskbar (non running), and it just offered to add the file to the icon pop-up

I suppose if the majority of applications developers are not adding the relevant code in their apps then this could be a reason for Microsoft to Deprecate their code too - it does mean less to go wrong and generate support calls

That would be nice, but remember all the vitriol about Microsoft's telemetry so many won't use or allow it. Many also won't use the feedback feature as well. Really the only loud voices are sites like this.

Not all, but a lot of the old legacy stuff is still there but you need to dig deep to find it, or reg edit it back from the dead.

BTW, has anyone discovered the "Windows Tools" in Control Panel...

I suppose it would be a little ironic if those who baulk against telemetry are now suffering loss of their favorite UI customisations as they never showed up in enough telemetry to suggest to MS to keep them available

@clam1952 - Thanks for the photo. Yes it is a small section for Windows 11 but I suppose it is logical that Winaero Tweaker will take some time to catch up with Windows 11 developments. At least it looks as if they are working on it. A work-in-progress as to be expected. Just like @barman58 said.

In the mean time.. I'm done with 10.. yup.. done with it.

My thoughts exactly. Be careful of what you ask for as you just may get it. Here many did everything to disable telemetry, and now....

Well - at least you can't disable telemetry on the insider builds.

:) The word screaming was intended metaphorically. If you never needed the features that were removed; I can understand. Everybody works different and has different needs. That's kinda the point. I and a great many more people did use those features. I can tell, not only from my field work on a customer computers, but also from the number of protests being lobbied all across this forum. Those who did and still do use those features removed from 11, aught to have the option to continue to do so.
You brought up, that the majority of the MS user base is business. This is undisputable. Nor is the fact that most businesses don't want their employees making changes to their systems and mucking things up across the network.
I worked for Centurylink. A multinational communications company. That company, along with many others I'm sure, DID allow employees to modify their own desktops on company computers (within parameters) to increase productivity. Modifying an employees individual task bar and creating shortcuts was one of those allowed privilege's. It cut down computer time, and made their employees more productive and effective both in the office and the field. Each employ was allowed to personalize his or her desktop to enhance job performance and productivity based on their personal needs and job description. Although I was also a Business Tech, and saw businesses (large and small) that also allowed employees to modify their desktops, I cannot claim to have sampled even a fraction of the businesses out there. Based on those I did see however, only a VERY small fraction did not allow employees to have limited desktop customization privilege's.
That said, the home user base still makes up a significant percentage of Microsoft's user base and I don't feel they should be ignored. Granted, power users that use the Feedback Portal probably make up only a small fraction of that group, but I feel their opinions mirror a more than significant number of the silent majority of that user base. Hence, a large number of requests and suggestions from that group (personal opinion) aught to have a slightly weighted impact on the decisions MS is making.
While I always enjoy and respect your well thought out posts Bunnyj, I sorta hope that you're wrong on this one. :)

I just reverted my Backup system back to Windows 10 since my processor isn't supported. Was rather simple as all I needed to do was make the cloned Windows 10 disk the boot drive :)

Anyway, I need a Windows 10 machine for comparison and support. My main system is of course fully Windows 11 supported so that's the OS there :)
