No, Microsoft is listening to ppl who are acting selfish enough to keep touting that the blatant removal of basic features was a marvelous idea in spite of the trivial fact nobody was forcing these same selfish ppl to use said features anyway to begin with. If the mere PRESENCE of these features was bothering you so much, then they could've decided to just add an option to hide/disable these features, to make them OPTIONAL. What's so difficult to understand about the term "option" or "optional"? Remember we are still only talking about basic features here. As in, not exactly rocket science. Again, I already brought these features back, sucessfully, by simply installing ExplorerPatcher. But this doesn't also mean that I am indifferent to those complaining that the latter solution is too tedious for them and/or they just don't trust the program (even though it is open source) so they are concerned that it might eventually break stuff. Microsoft just needs to finally put their sh1t together, that's all there is to say in this regard.

from the point of view of the vast majority of IT directors / IT managers the less customisation in the OS the better, they do not train their users how to move the taskbar, they want it fixed in the same place on every system they maintain/manage every thing that can be modified by the user has to be locked down, the users are not allowed to change the settings in any way, often colour schemes and wallpaper are set to match company colours and logos the simple reason for these lockdowns is that every possible non standard setting. could delay a technician, from fixing an issue - and that starts costing money multiply the one change on one system by 100 or 1000 or 10000 that the company uses and these costs can cost do much to risk the jobs of the very users who try to make changes to someone else's computers

Do you mean to tell me Microsoft doesn't have the brains to give IT directors / IT managers an easy OPTION to lock these customizations down?

Something they could do in the Enterprise edition.

In my own experience there are often reasons that some users have to be given a higher level of access often due to bad programming of applications, that need admin rights to run those are often the very people who will misuse this access to customise.

If microsoft has found that a sub set of optional controls are only used by a minority of the total userbase and decide to remove the option that is fine by me, if someone makes a hack to bring back this action, then that's fine too. as long as it does not break anything. and the hack is openly available and can be blocked by those in industry

I don't have much of a problem in displaying things in a newer OS, still recall t Norton Navigator on my MS-DOS 6 and Windows 3.1/Windows for Workgroups back before WIndow 95.

And they should be collecting an unemployment check instead of a paycheck.

Very true, unfortunately I was never in a position to decide that. And quite often they were at the top table in the company

The speculations about why MS changed Widows are just that... speculations, and I doubt any users here have any inside information from MS on their decision processes.

IMHO Windows is a multipurpose OS with likely many divisions that exerting influence on the direction on enhancements and architectual changes. Some of these influences would be business, security, marketing, hardware vendors, appearance, competitiveness, and simplification for the average non-business user. It is a never ending fight to find the best compromise that pleases the most number of users that impact their bottom line.

There is still much to be done, or could be done, and not everyone will be happy. If they were we would have nothing to discuss.

I have a hard time believing high level corporate execs outside the Microsoft eco system sat around wishing for round corners and aesthetics changes. They might have been pushing for tighter security and controls, but not buying round corners and beautification changes.

Anyway, my understanding is that Microsoft wanted a Mac like OS in terms of looks and UI changes. Obviously, with the world we live in now, tighter security was a must, as well as an OS that can take advantage of new(er) hardware and thus the the baby delivered is Windows 11.

Win 11 is OK for my needs. However if you drink a couple of shots of Scotch it seems even better!

Time to re-watch the Windows 11 announcement. Back then, when people watched it, they were like: "Interesting".

Now though... folks might have a different response. Now it sounds more like they were trying to convince people to like it.
Almost like they knew folks were gonna say... wtf???

Here I am nudging this thread up. (I wish this thread was called I'm done with Windows 11... )

I switched to Windows after 29 years of only using Apple products. I knew the OS wasn't as slick but I could feel a tonal change with the new management and faces. All during 10 I had one main complaint: why isn't the OS consistent in appearance and why is the OS so dated looking. Windows 10 had succeeded in flipping a few YouTubers who were iFreaks. I desperately wanted Microsoft to build on this.

Let me be clear. I'm not asking Windows to copy Mac OS in appearance. I'm asking it to drag its sorry @$$ into this century. When Zorin Linux appears 7 years ahead of Windows 10 -- great embarassment should ensue. And I'm not asking for Windows to do cartwheels over Mac and Zorin and Chrome. I just want it to be in the same visually appealing ballpark.

So that I could tell a Mac user what a fool they're being with their money, since most Mac people aren't creatives and do not need laptops with M1 silicone implants. That Windows is plenty pretty and you'll feel just as 'happy' in front of Windows.

On the previous board I'd observe you lifelongers rolling eyes at such discussion. "What an OS looks like doesn't matter -- it's what it can do!" Yeah and NOPE. When car shopping I not only buy the type of car I need but the best looking I can afford. I'm not alone in this.

So I was GOOSEBUMPS about Windows 11. I presumed they were going to do several things -- but it turns out they didn't.

1. There is still OS inconsistency. (Task Manager doesn't offer dark mode and the app itself isn't even modernized.) (Control Panel is still there!)
2. I presumed they wouldn't take away features already accepted by those who use them as great. (Drag and Drop to the taskbar.)
3. They did not bring the OS up to modern visual standards. Instead they nudged it closer.

And so here I am. Stuck. Unable to say "You really need to try the new Windows you lazy dinghead!" Because the fumbled, dropped the ball.

If Microsoft is so TERRIFIED of changing too much too fast -- support 10 until less than 25% of users use it. That's fair, right?

Meanwhile in 11 have a native app that supports theming/skins. Just like Android. How hard is this? Seriously.

All Apple has to do is lower their prices on those M1s and, if you ask me, this platform is done. The LEAST Microsoft could do is reward current users while AMD and Intel play a little Heinz Ketchup.

I've never used a Mac PC myself, but I know plenty of creative people who swear by Mac OS. In fact, I have a buddy, who like me, is a photographer, and was building his own Windows PC until he switched to a Mac about 2 years ago

Not sure what you're looking at, but OK :)
