Thunderbird sync issues folders

Hello,

Recently I opened Thunderbird and it automatically added the following folders to my account:

new folders.PNG

All the generic yellow folders below the Deleted trash can icon suddenly appeared and they weren't there or weren't shown before. I right-mouse clicked on the account folder, went to Subscribe, unticked the folders that I don't want to subscribe to (all the yellow ones were there), restarted Thunderbird and they all still appeared and the boxes I unchecked, had just rechecked themselves.

I don't want them shown. Is there anyway to fix this?

Try disabling any TB add-ons, restart TB. If that fixes it, one of your add-ons is causing the problem.

Then put them back one by one to see which one is the culprit. Talking to the computer.

No add-ons to disable in Thunderbird

Can you log in to the email account through another access (e.g. web based with a browser). If so, are those folders there as well?

What type of @ email account (domain based, web based, etc)?

I don't see those folders logging into the browser

it's an Outlook account, synced through Thunderbird

TB top menu > File > Subscribe > uncheck Templates

and/or this maybe of help.

Yup, did that. No change.


They weren't there yesterday. Again, this doesn't really address why these folders suddenly appeared in my view, today. Something changed but I don't know what.

Check your TBird account settings - both inwards/outwards (IMAP/SMTP) accounts should be
- connection security = SSL/TLS
- authentication method : OAuth2

Do any of the folders contain emails? If not, try deleting them (but knowing Microsoft's/Outlook's penchant for p1ss1ing off users, they'll probably be back)

Note I have 2 outlook.com(.au) email accounts in my TBird and don't have those folders (sorry for that piece of news :confused:).

Yeah, they're the only ones who do this bullsh*t.

I even deleted the account in Thunderbird and re-synced again and they still appear. I even un-checked them in Offline sync through the advanced box under settings and they refuse to go away. I've had this account for years and never saw them there.

I do have another MS account with those same folders appearing but that email account isn't critical and I'm not too worried about it.

Note I have 2 outlook.com(.au) email accounts in my TBird and don't have those folders (sorry for that piece of news :confused:).

Knock on wood, be prepared for that eventuality. 'Cause I suspect it's coming. ;-)

Did you set it up manually or did you let TBird do its auto/default thing?

Confirm you did the above, manually, visually?

I've had this account for years and never saw them there.
Microsoft changed the outlook (settings) rules recently, hence why "things" are only starting to happen. It's even worse for users of any one of the Outlook standalone email client iterations (Old, New, 365, etc), they (MS) want to direct everything - outlook or otherwise - through MS Exchange servers. Thus Microsoft sees all your emails, no matter who the service provider is.

I did the auto thing. I've used Thunderbird for so long I probably need to re-set the Outlook account password by now. But that is now such a pain-in-the-ass that I've been putting it off. I can't have that account locked up just because I changed the criteria. It's too critical.

I go into Thunderbird's password manager and the thing that's in there for this account doesn't look like any password I remember using. I do know MS has changed it's log-in requirement for two factor auth.

One is a password to log into your account, the other is a password (code) to log into the Outlook app. I see two entries in Thunderbird's password manager, once for each one I just mentioned. Took a awhile to get my head around what the difference is. I know yahoo did the same thing. I don't know about gmail though...

I dunno what I'm gonna do if I have to re-set it. I don't have a smartphone and haven't had the need for one.

Nope, Last time I did it, TBird still uses the previous auto settings that aren't what MS want. Either manually change as indicated above, or use the manual option to set up from scratch. If you keep refusing to do this, then so be it, I can't help any further.

Because TBird masks/encodes it. You have to manually reveal the underlying password chars

Haven't got a clue what you've done here. My outlook accounts in TB only have one password each. What Outlook "app"? An Outlook app shouldn't be a consideration if you're using TBird?

I probably need to re-set the Outlook account password by now
Why? Passwords should last forever (security breaches aside). If the password still gets you into the email account via the web site then that's got nothing to do with the TBird problems

Have you even looked at the Thunderbird specific instruction in the MS link I posted #15.All you have to do is follow them.
It says:
If you use Mozilla Thunderbird:

Mozilla Thunderbird does support Modern Authentication and it is recommended that you ensure you switch to use those settings. Any account that you add to Thunderbird will now automatically setup using the proper settings. You have the following options:

Option 1: Update Current Settings

  1. Change Thunderbird's server settings:
    1. Select  > Account Settings.
    2. In the left pane, select Server Settings for your Outlook.com or Hotmail.com account.

  2. Change Thunderbird's authentication method for sending messages (SMTP):
    1. Select > Account Settings.
    2. In the left pane, select Outgoing Server (SMTP).
    3. In the right pane, select your Microsoft account and then Edit… .

    5. Select OK to save your changes.
Option 2: Remove Current Account and Re-Add

If you remove your current account from Thunderbird and then re-add it, the proper settings will be detected, and you will just need to sign in to be properly configured with Modern Authentication and the proper server settings.

Have you even looked at the Thunderbird specific instruction in the MS link I posted #15.All you have to do is follow them.
It says:
If you use Mozilla Thunderbird:

Mozilla Thunderbird does support Modern Authentication and it is recommended that you ensure you switch to use those settings. Any account that you add to Thunderbird will now automatically setup using the proper settings. You have the following options:

Option 1: Update Current Settings

  1. Change Thunderbird's server settings:
    1. Select  > Account Settings.
    2. In the left pane, select Server Settings for your Outlook.com or Hotmail.com account.
    3. For Authentication method, select OAuth2 (instead of Normal password).

All that's been done on the Thunderbird side, yet you still need to log into MS's OWA and make sure two-factor authentication is set up.




That's the part I can't get to.

The password that's already stored in Thunderbird will not let me log into that same account using the web browser.
