Is there an app or a method of transferring music files from an external hard drive to your Music Folder on your computer in batch processing without transferring the files that are already in your Music Folder? Or do you have to do each file/folder one by one?

Regardless of the type of files I just select all to be transferred then drag to the new location such as from the external drive to C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE and appropriate folder. I choose Copy to assure there's no issue then later delete the original. Since a folder cannot contain 2 or more files of exact same name there will be messages about the files existing whether to overwrite or not so as to make a choice. Another way is a program that can find and manipulate duplicates, I've had success with Easy Duplicate Finder, probably are others.

I copied and pasted my external hard drive folder into my music folder, and it looks like it was successful, however, I don't see those albums/music files in my Windows Media Player. Therefore, do you or anyone else know how to get those files onto Windows Media Player?

Also, does anyone know if I uninstall Windows Media Player and then reinstall it, if all the albums in my music folder will then show up in my Windows Media Player? Or will I end up causing more damage?

However, I do have the Windows 11 "Media Player," but I don't seem to know how to get the Windows Media Player Legacy installed again. :(

Also, I tried this, but I couldn't even find "Optional features" under Apps in Settings. :rolleyes:

I use a .bat file to move my music/video files. It updates files with any changes, copies any new files over and leaves any remaining files.

robocopy "<Drive letter to copy from>:\<name of folder with your music files>" "C:\Users\<your username\Music" /s /XD $RECYCLE.BIN "System Volume Information" /R:1 /PURGE

mine looks like:

robocopy "E:\Music" "C:\Users\my_username\Music" /s /XD $RECYCLE.BIN "System Volume Information" /R:1 /PURGE

Add it to a text file and save it as a .bat file. Right click on it and choose run as administrator.

It will always copy files over from my E drive. E in my case is the dominant folder. If I manually deleted any files in the E folder, it would remove them from the C drive Music folder. But if I deleted any music files on my C drive, they would remain deleted unless they were on the E drive.

It might pay you to be safe to test it out on a different folder name on the external drive with a few test files in it to see how it works. The when you are sure it is working correctly, name the music folder where all your music is stored. Takes a bit of getting used to I admit, but I am able to keep lots of folder and drives backed up this way. I create shortcuts of the .bat files and tick the advanced box to run as administrator. I then put all the shortcuts in the start menu/programs folder and can have them handy on the start menu by right clicking the shortcut and picking 'pin to start menu'.

i was testing this on another 24h2 (insider build) pc and kept it would only show under option 1's location. both powershell and command prompt's commands output "feature name "windowsmediaplayer" unknown". so i dug up another command for dism and got it working. i made an installer and uninstaller .bat for anyone that wants them for future use @glasskuter

DISM Commands by themselves if you want to do them manually:
Code:
dism /online /add-capability /capabilityname:Media.WindowsMediaPlayer~~~~0.0.12.0
Code:
dism /online /remove-capability /capabilityname:Media.WindowsMediaPlayer~~~~0.0.12.0

WMPLegacy_Installer.bat (paste in notepad & save code as .bat (don't forget to remove .txt file extension)) (this will install and copy a shortcut to current user's start menu all apps list:
Code:
@echo off

:init
setlocal DisableDelayedExpansion
set "batchPath=%~0"
for %%k in (%0) do set batchName=%%~nk
set "vbsGetPrivileges=%temp%\OEgetPriv_%batchName%.vbs"
setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion

:checkPrivileges
NET FILE 1>NUL 2>NUL
if '%errorlevel%' == '0' ( goto gotPrivileges ) else ( goto getPrivileges )

:getPrivileges
if '%1'=='ELEV' (echo ELEV & shift /1 & goto gotPrivileges)

ECHO Set UAC = CreateObject^("Shell.Application"^) > "%vbsGetPrivileges%"
ECHO args = "ELEV " >> "%vbsGetPrivileges%"
