Solved Unable to Open Zip File

I am constantly getting a message that reads: Cannot complete the extraction. The destination file could not be created when I try to download a driver for a FiiO dac/headphone device I have tried moving the file to Documents, but still no luck. I am using Windows 11 64 bit on a two year old Dell laptop. I have rebooted, turned the dac/headphone amp device on and off and have plugged and unplugged its power cord. Help is appreciated. Thanks.

Is the download a Zip file. I.E., has a ".zip" at the end? If it is then do the following:

1. Double-click on the zip file until it opens in separate window

2. Left-click on file to select it and drag it to zip file location

3. You now have driver file to run by double-clicking on it

Many of those driver files are self extracting. There's always a possibility your file is corrupted. Have you tried using a zip utility (7zip highly recommended) to manually unzip it.
Install 7zip here 7-Zip
Leave the driver file you downloaded in downloads. Right click on it and select 7zip, and choose to Extract to 'filename'. (file name is whatever the driver file is named. It will be filled in for you) This creates a new unzipped folder in downloads with the same name as that of the driver file. Inside the unzipped folder, look for an executable (.exe) file. Sometimes its named install.exe or setup.exe or something similar.

I installed 7-Zip, but when I right clicked on the drive file in downloads, I the only option that made sense to click on was Open. I did not sse 7-Zip. When I clicked on Open, I got the same error message. I got the exe file in a separate window, but didn't know where to drag it to. I don't see the menu bar on the top that you showed in your reply -- i.e., File, Tools, Commands, etc. and then underneath Add, Extract To,, Test, View etc Don't see it.

Hold on. I now see the menu bar I referred to on the 7-Zip app, Do I drag the file drive icon on to that? And if so, how? Thanks for your patience. Sorry

I'm so sorry. I do not use the new modern fangdangled explorer context menu. Mine looks the way it did in WIndows 10. I apologize because when writing the instructions I didn't take into consideration that you were using the new context menu.
If 7zip created a folder that has the same name as your driver file, open the folder. Once unzipped the new folder would be in the same location as the file you unzipped. The exe file should be inside it.

If you are still having difficulty using that horrible right click menu and want to get you old right click menu back that gives you all your options, you can quickly do so. It's been a lifesaver for me. Disable "Show more options" context menu in Windows 11 Tutorial

There was absolutely no need to install 7-Zip. Windows 10 and 11 have the ability to open Zip files built into them. That's what's I did in my last post.

Like I said double-click on the zip file and drag the .exe file out of the zip folder shown. You can then close the zip folder.

BTW, I rarely use programs like 7-Zip anymore because there is not much need for them. However, I still use programs like that when I want to create my own zip files.

Can you supply a link for the download?

I tried one: http://fiio-firmware.fiio.net/DAC/FiiO_v5.50.0.zip

Edge informed me that it couldn't be downloaded securely, but I manually over-rode that. The result was a normal Zip file, which opens in Win11 (or 10) like a regular folder.

You should have no need for 7Zip. I keep it around to look inside archives that are not Zips.

For those of you saying he did not need 7zip, the reason I suggested 7zip is because he had already tried double clicking on the driver file to install it and had gotten the error which tells me the driver is in a self extracting exe file. Explorer did not open it in a separate window as would be expected of a .zip file. Explorer works with zip files but will not extract the contents of an .exe file into another folder. 7zip can.

7zip is heads and shoulders above explorer and rivals Winzip in what it can do with archive files.

Sorry about that. I I hadn't realize the OP was working with a self-extracting file. Of course we are assuming it is a self-extracting zip file. It may not.

The last time I had one of these self extracting zip files fail to extract was when it was created with a really old version of Winzip. I tested this with the following old versions of Winzip:

Winzip 6.3 Sep 20, 1997
Winzio 9.0 Feb 24, 2004

If I created a self-extracting file with Winzip 6.3 I got an error when I tried to run it in Windows 11.
However, if I created a self-extracting file with Winzip 9.0 it extracted and ran file in Windows 11.

I'm having a problem that might be related to this one. I'm trying to install QB64 on a new W11 system. It comes as a downloaded 7zip file. I tried three different "Unzippers", but they all failed. The error that they all reported was that they could not create the necessary directories. Finally, I found that WinZip was able to unzip the files in the documents directory seen in "Quick Access". It didn't solve the problem because, when I moved the files to the new QB64 directory and tried to install it, once again, it could not create the necessary directories. Now what? TechRetread

I assume you are talking about this file: qb64_dev_2022-09-08-07-14-00_47f5044_win-x64.7z (102 MB (107,455,548 bytes))

Since it is a 7-zip file did you try to extract the contents with 7-zip?

I couldn't get WinZip 9.0 to open it either. I don't currently have 7-zip installed but I do have WinRAR. WinRAR opened the file fine.

I dragged the folder qb64 to the desktop and then opened it.

If I double-click on qb64,exe, then QB64 runs.

First, you are using an ancient version of QB64. You may want to consider obtaining the latest (version 3.70) here:

Second, QB64 requires no "installation". Simply drag and drop the files to the destination.

NOTE: There are a lot of files and some of the paths may be pretty deep. Avoid copying the files to a very long path as the destination.

I use C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\QB64PE

You also don't need the "QB64" folder itself (now QB64PE in current versions). Just grab all the contents WITHIN the QB64 (or QB64PE) folder and drop it to the destination. Note that there are over 22,000 files so it may take a little while.

EDIT: Make sure you are downloading the x64 edition.

Some people confuse QBasic and QuickBasic. QBasic is the free version included with DOS. QuickBasic is a paid for commercial version of QBasic. One of the main advantages of QuickBasic is you can create an .exe file.

I have QB64 v2.1 the latest version from the QB64 Official branch. You don't have to install it either. You just drop the qb64 folder. That folder contains 20,825 files.

I have the original QBasic and QuickBasic 4.5 programs installed on my computer. However, it does not run in Windows 11 so I had to install it in DOSBox.

I agree that the Phoenix 3.7 edition may be the newest version available but the one I demonstrated is not ancient. It is merely one developed in a different fork of QB64 as shown below

Due to a shakeup in the community in 2022, there are now at least two forks of the QB64 project. The "QB64 Team" Github repository is no longer active, and all new development is being done in new forks.
