Solved Virgin Media ...thinking of leaving to another Broadband supplier...Router Ethernet Port / E-mail address query.

I am thinking of leaving Virgin Media to another supplier due to cost.
My query is the number of Ethernet Ports router's have as my present Virgin Media router ( the white one ) has 4 which is perfect for my requirements.
Now,if i decide to go to Sky / BT what is the number of Ethernet ports the router's have..1-4..or just 1.

Secondly, E-mail address which i use .Sky / BT or any other supplier will have to create a new one and unlike mobile phone numbers when switching you can keep same mobile phone number.


I have read somewhere that you can keep your current E-mail address from existing Broadband supplier but you will be charged for it.

Can someone enlighten me who have switched to another supplier and exactly what happens.

I left Virgin a few years back, and there was no option to keep the email address (that I never used anyway) even at a cost. You should really set yourself an ISP-independent email address somewhere like Gmail. That way, you can change ISPs without having to worry about changing your email address every time.

As for router ports, I'm not sure what Sky has on their newer routers. I'm pretty sure my old one had 4, as does my current BT router. It's not much of an issue if they have less, as you can pick up a 5 or 8-port switch for around a tenner that you can just add on after the router.

Having googled on your behalf i can tell you Virgin, BT & SKY routers have 4 ethernet ports, you can add ethernet switches to increase this number if you need. Virgin and SKY use BT infrastructure.

Totally agree.

VM don't even give new email addresses to new customers any more, they assume users will have their own through Gmail, Outlook etc

No, you’ll lose your VM email address. I’d recommend setting up a Yahoo or Google account rather than using ISP email.

Have you considered phoning VM & renegotiating your contract? If not it’s work to trying & you still have the option to cancel. Most likely a few days after they may call with an even better deal to get you to stay.

I'm switching from BT ADSL to BT all digital (£40) and it will actually reduce my bill. So shop around.

Will consider renegotiaing contract with VM.
As regards e-mail address .....ends in ntlworld.com giving to me years ago during dial up days.
I think ...Cable and Wireless...then Diamond Cable...then Ntlworld...then Virgin...now Virgin / o2 classed as a legacy customer
but don't get any special offers as i am regarded as a standard Joe Public.

If like here, they might offer a better deal "for a year or two" and then....
Just make sure to ask before signing the dotted line.
