Weird audio/headphone behavior

I normally have my laptop speakers muted, but sometimes I'll plug headphones in, and then I automatically get audio.

More recently, if I want to listen to something really quick, I'll use the keys that turn the speakers on and off (HP keyboard, that I'm not with now, I think it's F4/F5) - on to listen, then mute with those keys.

Today I started to watch a youtube video and there was no sound, even though my headphones were plugged in. I used the system tray speaker control to mute then unmute the speakers and then I had sound through the headphones. But when I unplugged the headphones, the video stopped.

I don't know if this was caused by 24H2 to which I upgraded last week, or a cumulative update (I don't have the number) that was installed today. Or maybe because of my messing with the F4/F5 (or whatever) keys. Or both?

All I want is my version of "normal" which is:
  • If the speakers are muted - by whatever means - no sound comes from the computer
  • But plug headphones in, and I can hear audio through them
  • Then unplug the headphones, the audio stops - but the youtube playback continues without pausing
How do I get back to where I'd been?
