Solved What's the best AIO cooler for a 9800X3D

Currently have a Corsair H150i LCD 360 AIO that's about 8 months old (used it on my 7800X3D). I know the temps of the 9800X3D will be higher because the wattage of the CPU is higher but running games like Dragon Age Veilguard or Indiana Jones or Witcher 3 bring the operating temp to between 175F and 180F. I checked and re-pasted the CPU/AIO also.

Is there a better AIO to use for the 9800X3D?

What CPU temperatures do you get when it is idling or with low usage?

Right now, with minimal usage, it's at 117F. Games shoot it up to 180F (where the 7800X3D was only at 150F).

Interesting. Both CPUs are spec'd at 120W.

But, as you say, reviews show the 9800X3D drawing much more power than the 7800X3D. But still much less than, say, an I9-14900K.

I have an iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLIX. I've replaced its fans with three fans from XPG, as I found the Corsair fans to be noisy at full speed. (Not RGB, though.) I haven't checked temps lately, but it kept a slightly OC'd I9-13900K out of throttling (at 100C).

Edit, later: I did a Cinebench R23 run on that system. (10 minutes.) The CPU temperature peaked at 86C (187F). The CPU was running at about 250W. Room temp was 20C (68F). Seems OK, as the CPU wasn't throttling. In iCue, the pump was set to "extreme".

At a guess, there may be more effective AIO coolers out there than the Corsair, but I doubt that they'd be enough better to justify swapping one in.

But if it'll fit in you (unspecified) case, a Silverstone Icemyst 420 might help. Surprisingly inexpensive.

This is interesting: just played an hour of God of War Ragnarok at ultra settings and 4K and the temp never went above 144F, about the same as the 7800X3D. And the game looked better than ever.

I also played CyberPunk 2077 4K, ultimate settings, and the CPU only got to 150F. Out of curiosity, I went into the BIOS and turned on SVM. WOW, temps during CyberPunk went up to the 180Fs.

Apparently, the 9800X3D and SVM don't play nice together. Maybe a word of caution to other users to be wary of SVM.

I don't pretend to understand it, but SVM (virtualization) appears to be related to some security features in Windows 11.

I haven't disabled it on my systems.

Techpowerup tested one of these same CPU's and the temperatures below are at stock settings with a Noctua CPU cooler.

Under load 86.7 Celsius = 188 degrees Fahrenheit
Games (Cyberpunk 2077) 60.8 Celsius = 141.44 degrees Fahrenheit.

Noctua NH-D15? That's one of the largest air coolers on the market.

(I have an old NH-D14 on the shelf. So old that its fans weren't PWM.)
