Which type of Recovery USB should i configure for WIndows 11 Pro and Macrium Reflect X?


Should it be Windows RE or Windows PE?

Either will work. Personally I always make Win RE rescue media.

Win RE is the default. It includes WiFi support, including remembering your WiFi key.

Win PE requires an additional download of the PE components.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

Oh ok Thank you! so much Will go with RE version then in this case.

Wanted to be sure one i went with would work, if i ever need to use it. With Macrium Reflect 8 Home i admit i didn't restore too often, believe i made a PE one back then.

Might Test it this time before i need to use it, probably a better idea

Yes, you should always test that you can boot from the recovery USB before you actually need to use it in anger.

In addition to the USB I like to add Reflect to the boot menu, giving me two options to boot to Reflect. Of course this is only of use if the drive is still intact enough to be bootable, so making a USB should be the first priority.

Macrium RE configured USB Boot drive worked successfully on first try!

Also tested out a Clone operation from NEW Samsung 990 Evo Plus Boot NVMe to Old Kingston 1TB NVMe in M.2 enclosure, appears to have worked successfully, keeps the Kingston in case ever have issues with Samsung 990 Evo Plus boot drive, plus wanted to use the usb C enclosure, and complete my first ever clone operation as a test
