Wi-Fi turns off after Windows Security update

Hello all,

I don't post here very often but I have a problem with Windows Security. Twice now the Wi-Fi has been turned off by itself. Both times it happened right after a Windows Security/Defender update. The first time this happened was about 10 days ago, then it happened again today. This laptop is less than a year old, running 24H2 with 16GB Ram and a 1TB SSD. Both times when the wi-fi turned off I restarted and did get back online but the wi-fi was very slow to connect. After the problem happened today I reset the Wi-Fi network and it is working ok now but there has to be something causing this problem. I have never had to reset the wi-fi adapter on any other computer I have owned. I thought maybe trying a third party antivirus might help but I don't know if that would work because Windows Defender still gets updates even if there is a third party AV installed. I would like to find and correct the problem, I did search here and Google but did not find a solution. Thanks for any help with this.

I've seen the same happen but the security was always re-enabled after rebooting from the update. Some things get turned off as they can't be updated when in use.

Thanks very much, I wonder if it is a bug in 24H2 then. I just got this laptop in December and this is my first time using 24H2. I may try a third party AV anyway just to see if it helps.

Thanks

I found out more about this problem. It was not the Defender update causing the wi-fi trouble. It was the Windows update KB5050094, which I had installed a few days ago. The wi-fi was turned off again tonight and I could not find what caused it. I restarted, the wi-fi was back on, then as a test I installed Avast Free, the laptop ran ok for a few minutes and then the wi-fi still turned off again. I removed Avast, restarted again and downloaded Avast Clear to get rid of any residual Avast files. Avast Clear restarted the laptop in safe mode but in this case Windows said there was a problem and it could not find my login pin. I had set a restore point before installing KB5050094 so I restarted again to exit safe mode and I restored the system back to right before the update and my laptop and wi-fi have been running fine since then. Now I just need to figure out how to block that update. I really don't want to see it again.

Thanks for the info about Powershell. I tried it 3 times and cannot get it to work. It gives an error about downloading from an untrusted repository. I don't know enough about Powershell or the Windows Terminal to be monkeying around with them. I still see the KB5050094 as an available update in my settings but it is not installed. I will just have to keep an eye on it, it's a preview update and I will try to ignore it. I have read that MS does not force-install preview updates and I hope that is true. So far today my wi-fi is still ok too.

Thanks for the help on this.

use this portable app. its a gui. just search for updates, check the box of the one you dont want to install and click the hide button.

Thanks again, unfortunately I don't see a download link or exe file for that Wumgr app. Also, I really am not familiar with Github apps, I don't really know how to use Github very well. I don't know how to open or run anything from there.

It’s under “Releases” on the left side.

it’s just a portable all like any other. Extract the zip and run the exe inside

Thanks very much for your help with this. Once I understood how to find, extract and run WUMGR it worked great. I hid the update, restarted and it is not listed in the Updates folder now and I sure hope it stays gone. My wi-fi is also still doing ok, so far, so good. One reason I installed the KB5050094 update was that it was supposed to fix the disappearing mouse cursor problem in the address bar and text fields on Edge and Chrome on 24H2. Even with the update installed I still had that problem. I have gone back to Firefox now and the cursor works fine there. I hope there is a permanent fix for Chromium some time soon. I do appreciate your help with this.
