I have ascertained it is only the link between PC and router. It is also not limited to a specific app.

Doing something such as streaming video to my TV when data stops flowing. WiFi still shows connected. Disconnect/connect and it starts working again. I can see it happening in task manager/performance.

I use a Netgear WNA1100 N150 on the PC. In USB2 socket. I have 2 of them and have swapped between them. I have swapped USB ports. I have run sfc. I have rebooted the router. There is no updated driver for the WiFi device.

Can't think of anything else to try. I see they still sell those Netgear dongles, so presumably it is not out-of-date.

I use a few USB Wireless dongles on Notebooks and generally have no issue. I do turn off/disable the internal Wireless adapter. There's 2 reasons for using the USB dongle, on one Notebook it's because it doesn't have 5G support and does not have Bluetooth Wireless while the dongle does. Another reason on an older Notebook is because the internal adapter is only 802.11g, doesn't support 802.11n or the newer 802.11ac or 802.11ax while the USB dongle does. What I see with the older Notebooks is that somewhere around 2014 the adapters started adding 5G alongside 2G for better speed [but not always for better range].
