If I go to stettings -> Network & Internet -> Wi-Fi I can do whatever and it all works.

The task bar Wi-Fi, however is having issues and not the simple obvious ones that I can find tutorial for.

First, the taskbar Wi-Fi icon is present, its not missing which is what most of the tutorials are for that I can find.

Second, the Wi-Fi icon on the task bar also toggles correctly, I can turn the Wi-Fi off and on, and connect from inside the Settings app and the Wi-Fi icon on the task bar does update and show the correct state of things.

However, if I click on the Wi-Fi icon in the task bar, while it pulls up the task bar menu correctly, and inside the menu it shows the correct status and correct network if I am connected to one, clicking on that to try and adjust anything just closes this menu as if I had clicked elsewhere on the desktop instead of in the menu.

Testing now, it looks like right-click on the Wi-Fi icon and then select "Network and & Internet services" it does actually call up the correct setting windows, so I am less annoyed by the issue now, but right before making this post, that did not work, which is why I started writing this.

I am guessing it is a services issue, as I like to turn off as many of those as I don't need and once in a while overstep my bounds by a service here or there. Does anyone know what service that might be, or other issue if not a service?

Only 2 services that are needed for that flyout are:
- WLAN AutoConfig
and it's dependecy:
- Windows Connection Manager.
But i guess those 2 are both running on your system, otherwise wifi would not be in a connected state.

What if you right click the entry of your wifi, and click properties?, or on the (i) button?

The first thing I do when Windows is behaving 'oddly' is to restart the PC, just restarting can be enough to reset things that have got 'out of step'. This MUST be a Restart to ensure a full startup from cold, just shutting down may not be enough if fast startup is enabled as this would only be a warm start.

If the problem persists the next step should be to open an Admin Terminal or a Command Prompt (Admin) and run the command: SFC /ScanNow

If SFC finds issues it cannot fix, then run Dism /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth then run the SFC command again.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Slight digression and dumb question. The top of the console says Version 10.x for Windows. Shouldn't it be Version 11 of some form or is the console still only on version 10? That just looks weird to me.

Not a dumb question. That is the correct version number, the 26100 build number identifies this as Windows 11 24H2. The 10.0. at the beginning, same as for Windows 10, is apparently retained for compatibility reasons.
This isn't a bug. It's by design for compatibility issues so that a ton of software doesn't stop installing because it thinks that Windows 11 is an unsupported operating system.

The last number .863 is the minor build number, showing the update level of your 24H2. That build dates back to June 2024 when 24H2 was only officially release for Copilot+ PCs on Snapdragon processors. 24H2 wasn't released for the rest of us until October.

I'm puzzled as to why you are still on such an old build, how you got it in the first place, and why it hasn't seen any updates. This may account for your issues. The current build for 24H2 is:
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.26100.3476]
