OS
Windows 11
Or I have to manually allow it to download it and install it
I just get an offer to install it,but I don't have time during the week to deal with it,I want to use my laptop not wait who knows how much time to be installed
Even if I leave the laptop to install it overnight, I don't know if I will encounter any problems that will not allow me to use my laptop

Hello, :alien:

If you like, you can pause Windows Updates for now, and resume updates when you're ready to let them install. The tutorial below can help show you more on this if needed.

24H2 failed on 2 of my machines during the download on both Patch Tuesday and using Windows Update then I changed the method in Settings, Windows Updates to On then checked again, no issue. Weird.

If you are really concerned about potential issues with upgrading, you can always simply restore a backup (you do have backups, right?). I typically do a backup just prior to an upgrade so I can restore to the state I was in just before initiating the upgrade. And since my backups are just incremental, I can typically create the backup in under 1 minute.

If I had to restore, I can do that in about 5 to 10 minutes.

If you are looking to upgrade to 24H2, as long as there are no block on the system (I had one for a while because I'm using a WD 2TB NVME drive - that issue is now cleared), you should automatically receive the update (I think it's still on a slow roll-out to all those without blocks).

If you are looking to stay on 23H2, I would like to recommend GRCs InControl. I am currently using it due to driver and software issues on my main system. With it running, I will not be offered any 24H2 upgrades, but I continue to receive any updates for 23H2 (including KB5050021 that was just offered today as part of Patch Tuesday).

On my laptop Microsoft did an auto-download and attempted and auto-install of 24H2. The auto-install failed because or some issue addressing memory. And that was the end of that.

A few days later I download an install ISO from Microsoft and used Rufus to create a bootable flash-drive from the ISO. I installed 24H2 to my Desktop PC without problems. Then I did the install to my laptop, which went absolutely fine (no memory issues at all).

My point, for the laptop, is that automatic installed failed but that doesn't mean it would necessarily fail if you try a manual install.

I installed it manually today and the first thing I notest is
1.It removed some(maybe all)of my modifications to the registry
2.It enabled modern sleep(which I disabled,I don't like it)

When you install 24H2 over an already working system, it does a reset of the OS and removes any tweaks or optimizations that you do so that it can ensure that the OS will work out of the box. It has no idea that the tweaks and customizations that you did on the previous OS will work with the new one.

This is fine but if you use Rufus to make the boot flash drive the core of the 'privacy'/'telemetry' 'agreements' stuff gets dealt with in one go automatically as the install proceeds. At least that was my experience. That said, there is a lot left to sort out yourself but O&O ShutUp10++ can get a lot of that in one fell swoop. Yahoo!

I upgraded with an in place from 23H2 to 24H2 for about a month and went back to 23H2.
I didn't lose any tweaks at all after the upgrade to 24H2, not that I noticed. And I’ve got a lot of reg tweaks from Brink and elsewhere.

Antspants how did you do an in-place upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2? The in-place upgrade tutorial says "The Windows 11 installation media (ISO or USB) must be the same edition, same version, and same or higher build as the currently installed Windows 11." Aren't 23H2 and 24H2 different versions?

Antspants how did you do an in-place upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2? The in-place upgrade tutorial says "The Windows 11 installation media (ISO or USB) must be the same edition, same version, and same or higher build as the currently installed Windows 11." Aren't 23H2 and 24H2 different versions?

Hi, Welcome.

When you want to get someones attention, you can put the @ symbol in front of their name. @jb99

I used RUFUS 4.6 to create the 24H2 media using an ISO from Microsoft

Then ran SETUP .exe that is on the USB install media that RUFUS created, from within File Explorer. I disabled Updates when asked, during the upgrade process.

Option 2

It’s really no different from Microsoft offering 24H2 in a Windows Update. I did the in place upgrade because my system is unsupported and I know I wont be offered 24H2 from Microsoft

@jb99 originally, before RUFUS got updated to version 4.6, there was a work around (which as it states at the top, is no longer needed)

I am not sure how the in-place upgrade comments in the tutorial and 24H2 are differentiated.

I'm not sure about an in-place update to 24H2 but I did a manual update of the system via Rufus and in that manual update I chose to use a different 'Edition' to the one already installed on my Desktop PC and Laptop. The previously installed edition on both machines was "English" — in effect "English (United States)". I changed that to "English International" — in effect "English UK" (aka "British English"). This change to a different Edition went without a hitch.

Of course in doing that manual update I lost all my previously installed applications and had to reinstall them from scratch. But I was aware of that before updating so that was fine by me. I also lost most of my system settings and had to re-do them from scratch. But, again, I knew this would happen so that too was fine by me. On this 'settings score', and me being cautious, I would have had to check all the settings anyway so re-doing them wasn't really anything much by the way of additional hassle.
