10 and 11 Linux
I hand built a W11 Home on an older PC......Win 11 seems to work fine....
C:\System is M.2.....
Now I want to add 2 more drives......
1. Samsung 870 EVO 1 Tb......good drive as it works perfectly on any W10 machine in my office.....
2. 6Gb SATA drive...

1. So far I cannot get the Samsung to be recognized by the system....does NOT show up in disk management....it is NTFS.....
Works fine on other W10 machines....
Using diskpart I converted it to GPT.......and it still does not recognize the drive.....

2. I haven't played with the 6Tb SATA drive yet......gotta solve the issue with the Samsung first....

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated....
Steve

My understanding is Win 11 requires GPT for the System drive.........but do additional drives also require GPT.....????

No additional drives do not require gpt.

The 6 tb drive may not be recognized due to the limitations of your motherboard. Not all bios will recognize these larger drives.Check your mobo manual. Check to see if bios recognizes it. Make sure your bios is updated.

Drives larger than 2TB need to be GPT.

As you refer to a 1TB drive, either MBR or GPT should be OK.

I wondered if there is resource competition. According to the manual, for the Z97-AR, the M.2 slot competes with two PCI-E X1 slots, but not any SATA ports. Is that the motherboard in question?

Look in the BIOS for information about connected SATA devices.
If the connected SATA device is not displayed, turn off the computer and check again that the SATA device is properly connected to the motherboard. Also check that the power cables are connected to the device and the motherboard.

Wow...alll kinds of help....THANKS....
Glasskutter.......I have swapped sata ports and even pluged in a PCIe sata card...has 4 ports.....nada....

Abactuon.....went thru BIOS and I see nothing about turning SATA ports on or off....The C:\ system drive is a M.2 on the MB.....Power cables seem tight....

Bobkn....The M.2 system drive is 256 Gb.....The Samsung drive I'm trying to get working is 1Tb.....both are GBT...The MB as ASRock B250M-HDV....I'm guessing less than 4 yrs old....

I think I'm gonna wipe the M.2 and load Win 10 and see if I can get the drives working on W10.......I have a LOT more experience on W10 and am just now getting into W11 and so far my luck is not good..........Will report back later....

If the UEFI bios doesn't see the drive, 10 or 11, the OS has nothing to do with it.

All that I see in the manual is:

" * If M2_1 is occupied by a SATA-type M.2 device, SATA3_5 will
be disabled."

It'd be a little unusual that your M.2 drive is SATA rather than NVME. Is it SATA?

I can't decipher that.

Are you saying that you verified the SATA ports with another device? That'd be an obvious thing to try, if you have a spare, working SATA device.

Bobkin......I think I am not understanding you......you say "spare working SATA device"......not sure what you mean......I guess a SATA device could be a SATA hard drive...which is what I'm trying to get the MB to recognize......I don't know how to "verify SATA ports"...
The ASRock B250-HDV MB has 1 NVME socket....I have a 256 Gb M.2 in that port which holds the OS........and the board has 4 normal SATA ports and NONE of them work......at least I cannot get them to work.....I have 1 - SATA SSD 1 Tb drive that I want to hook up with one of the SATA ports.......and I have tried a 4 SATA port PCIe plug in card and that does not work........My SATA SSD works fine on other computers.......but all my other computers are Win 10............The PC I'm working on is about 4 maybe 5 years old......I had W10 on it than installed W11 on top......the computer runs fine on W11.....

It makes no sense to me that the MB will not allow more than one Hard Drive installed.....,.with 1 NVME slot and 4 SATA slots I should be able to
have 2 SATA drives working......maybe 3............I can see populating the NVME slow would shut down 1 SATA port but not all 4......

I'm about ready to junk the PC and buy something else....

Thanks for sticking with me.....

Nothing advanced.

I wondered if you had a different device you could plug in to check whether the port(s) are working.

The manual doesn't indicate that using an NVME M.2 drive would disable any of the SATA ports.
