OS
Windows 11 Pro
Example: https://launchservicing.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Goal-Solutions_GS_Logo_Light.png

If I try to save that (in all the various ways), it opens File Explorer Save dialog with the file extension being .webp, and the only File Type options are .webp or All Files.

It behaves the same way for me in Chrome and Firefox, also Incognito and Private browsing. You can try indirectly from this page as well: Contact - Launch Servicing

Is there something about the file itself, like it's misnamed (saved as .webp? I've never heard of that), that's triggering File Explorer to think it's .webp? I thought Windows determined file type by file extension, not like Mac which scans the file contents.

Update: I ran the .png URL through an analyzer - Analyze file format online - and it says it's format HTML 😳 I'm completely confused now.

Hello @elevadu and welcome to ElevenForum. :-)

When images on websites do that... just right click them and choose: Copy
Then paste them in any image editor and save them in whatever format you like. :-)

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Webp is the latest lossless/lossy format compression. It’s becoming more and more popular due to the fact the compression can be close to nearly 25%/35% better respectively.
Not all designers/websites/servers use it.

Best thing to do is right click on the image where possible and select view (or similar) then right click again & save as.

When this happens I usually just take a screenshot/snip of the image and save it.

I discovered that the problem was the image itself. Something about how the website displayed it. I couldn't reproduce the issue on any other websites.

WEBP is developed by google. It provides high-quality images with smaller file sizes compared to other formats like JPEG and PNG. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, making it versatile for web use, where fast loading times are crucial.

You can only screenshot it or save it and convert png, jpg etc.

Thanks, but that doesn't add anything to what I said. The problem was that the way the website sent the user to the browser, it's impossible to download it as anything but a .webp regardless of the URL being .png.

I don't care about it now because it was a one-off.

That means it doesn't affect my experience anywhere else.

The issue is resolved.
