Hi There

This sounds like a really dumb question, but I cannot re-install my Windows 11. One thing I have noticed is thtat Windows never tells you when to remove your install media.
After playing around with Linux Lite (and others) it always tells you when to eject your USB media you booted from (with F12 Custom boot). Windows never has adopted this common sense feature. I cannot get a successful install or repair. It sticks in a loop, even if I wipe the Nvme Boot drive and do a clean install. Rinse repeat forever.

This Windows 11 was upgraded from a Windows 10 Pro 64 but I am wishing I had done a new install when I bought the Nvme Boot drive.

I have no secure Boot, No Bit Locker, UEFI boot, I even tried DVD, ISO and Rufus & Microsoft generated USB. BIOS is current.

I always disconnect the drive from the computer right after hitting restart.
I never did, it depends on BIOS settings, the installation USB isn't on top and the onetime boot order is selected by F12/F10 or... whichever is supported

Hello @Mtech and welcome to ElevenForum. :-)

On Gigabyte motherboards, instead of hitting the DEL key to enter the BIOS... press the F12 key.
This will bring up the "Boot Menu".

Any device you boot from there will be "only once".
This means you don't need to remove the install media during or after Restart.

For example, my "Boot Menu" looks like this...

0000 Boot Menu - USB stick.webp

The "Boot Menu" is not IN the BIOS.
The Boot Menu will allow you to boot from any attached device... one time only.
On restart the computer will go back to booting from the default device.

Also I gave you ten points, just for filling out your computer specs.

Here's the list (pic) of all the Boot Menu and BIOS keys for various computers.... if anyone wants it.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?

Just to make sure, you ARE using the workaround method to clean install 11 on incompatible hardware...right?
Are you trying to install 24h2? If so, your device has to supportt SSE4.2 which is a requirement that can NOT be bypassed.

I always disconnect the drive from the computer right after hitting restart.
But which restart? That's the Question, I would assume the first one as all the data should be copied onto the Boot drive.
Windows seems to always reboot more than once.

If you're doing a clean install, and the BIOS isn't set to boot from the USB drive first, you can leave the USB drive in.

If you have changed the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the USB first, then during the first reboot you can enter the BIOS again, i.e., to change the boot order back to normal again (e.g., set it to boot from the OS drive only), and, in addition to this, unplug the USB. Choose "Save changes & Exit". (Usually that would be the F10 key.)

I always disconnect the drive from the computer right after hitting restart.
This is the correct answer - the usb drive can be removed on first reboot during installation.

No need to overthink this.

Whether your BIOS requires you to change the boot order before it will allow you to boot from USB depends on your BIOS. Some certain restrictions might or might not apply in this regard.

But which restart? That's the Question, I would assume the first one as all the data should be copied onto the Boot drive.
Windows seems to always reboot more than once.
Yes, it is the first restart. I know years ago when I would do a clean install, the install would start over if the USB drive was still connected. Reading some of the replies on this thread I take it that that isn't the case anymore. If I ever do a clean install again I'm going to leave the drive connected and see what happens.

Windows seems to always reboot more than once.
Whether you need to remove the usb depends entirely on the system concerned. Only if your bios is set with the usb at the top of the boot order by default would it be necessary.

But if you do want or need to remove it, then at the first reboot is the time to do so.
