Windows 11 saves my jepgs as jfif files by default.

Windows 11 saves my jepgs as jfif files by default. Is there any way to change this? So far I have just been opening up the jfif in the photo app, then saving the jfif as a jpeg, it works, but it seems there should be a way to change the default.

Jfif is the latest variation of the JPEG standards, There are numerous online convertors available or you can open the Jfif file in microsoft Paint and resave as one of it's available formats

There may be (Should be ) an option in your application that is producing the files to revert to the older standard or an alternative

Windows saving JPG or JPEG as JFIF [Fix]

If Windows 11/10 saves JPG or JPEG downloaded from the internet as JFIF image files, then you need to edit this Registry key in Windows.

Some additional trials and investigation shows this to be a change in the registry made (but not fully activated back in the Windows 10 days

The entry is
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg]
"Extension"=".jpg"

This will correct this (assuming that MS have not changed the location of the entry

I've included a .REG file ( save and double click the file ...

I would also say backup your system first - Just in Case

I'm curious about this one. When you say "Windows 11" saves them do you mean a specific program within Win11? If not how is Win11 saving a .jpg file?

If I take a picture with my phone, and email it to myself, 11 would download it, and it would be saved as a jfif. I'm not sure what you mean by a specific program, all my photos open with the windows photo app, I guess that's the default, and I don't have any problem with the windows photo app, I actually like it.

Just to be sure, have you tried downloading directly from the phone to the Windows 11 device? I believe the Jfif format is only used for emailed JPeg images so a card reader or cable that can read the images directly from the Phone or the phones SD Micro card would be another way to ensure you get the JPEG rather than Jfif format images

I am wondering what format your phone saves images as? For a specific program in your case it would be the mail reader/client you are using. How is the picture shown in the email? The attachment. Is it jfif or something else?

Sophisticates will sneer at me, but I've found that if I change the .jfif extension to .jpg, apps that complain about .jfif files have always opened the .jpg.

@BamaInArk The phone saves it as a normal Jpeg, but certain programs (and possibly browsers, when using a web based email service) alter it to the Jfif standard because it is 'newer' - or whatever reason.

In the past, Internet Explorer had a similar bug where when you tried downloading a file from the Internet, say a PNG, it would offer to save it as a BMP instead.

@RD Mercer - Are you using an Android-based phone, or an iOS-based phone?

JG, way I understand the Jfif format is that it has better compression and security, than the JPEG format so is ideal for email - eventually the standard Non Microsoft editors may include the format in their standards - or that's what MS are hoping - My phone is set to shoot images in RAW format so it's not an issue I have myself

but then thought better of it as I remembered the IE BMP bug of yesteryear. Also make use of RAW as well (on my phone too).

I'm hoping he has an Android, though, because the Google Nearby Share app for Windows is a lifesaver if you're physically near the computer.

The only thing I use the phone to photograph are quick snaps - normally to record the status / location, and connections of kit I'm working on.
I have a number of DSLR's and high end Compacts available to me at all times that allow me to actually frame images - and they shoot video too

You do it that way... the images are .jpg by default.

This issue was already fixed in August 2023. Wasn’t really worth a 15 month old bump, was it?
