Ftp is great (depending on your upload speed) In Australia you be lucky to get 100/40 speeds. I get 114/40 which for FTTN is pretty good here. Many don’t get a 1/4 of that. I use it all the time, upload stuff onto my server for people. They click a link I email and TaDaaa!

In view of the fact that my Flash Drives won't last forever, they will probably outlast me.
And, that's good enough for me.
A few years ago, I think it was Sony that was boasting that heir CD's would last for 30 years.
That did sound impressive, since they would outlive me by decades. But today, I rarely burn anything to CD/DVD's. Even though I still have hundreds of them, sitting on the shelf, and the full retail version of NERO Burning Rom, software, ssfely tucked away.
New PC's today, don't even come with CD drives any more.
Back in The Day, I used to copy my own Utilities CD and send the copies to friends all around the world. Now, I can't send them to Canada any more, due to Canadian mail laws.
and Google won't allow the mailing of any Executable file.
The last CD I mailed to a friend in Canada never made it past the border.
Hopefully someday technology will provide a better way of sharing data over borders.

I had a friend visit me from Oregon and the airport confiscated her suitcase of CD ROMS. She never got them back. CANADA, is so backward in so many ways and I can freely make this statement because I live here and I've experienced this sort of social injustice first hand. I still use CDs, but I have to be fair enough to state that I've burned out at least a half dozen USB sticks. Those cells in that silicon can only be replaced so many times. Speaking of silicon, one would do well not to confuse silicon with silicon dioxide (Quartzite). That said quartz crystals do play a role in technology but silicon is a horse of another colour. But keep that hammer and chisel handy because silicon is a mineral too however brittle.

In theory, anything written to a NAND chip, should last for 1000 years, but in the real world, the circuitry that writes the data in there, and reads it out, is not so robust, usually made with hobby grade components. In fact, our entire computers are made from Hobby Grade components.
For instance, External hard drives seldom fail, but their electronic enterfaces DO! I have several HD's that came out of External Enclosures that had failed.
I save everything to Flash Drives, and knowing that any one could fail on any one day, I use several of them, not relying on just one.
Just yesterday, I did some data re-organization and then wrote all my data files to a 1TB Flash Drive that had not been used for that purpose before. That took a while, because I have data files going back thirty years.

When I worked in the Caterpillar Research Labs, 40+ years ago, I designed and built a lot of circuitry, and it was a real pleasure to work with electronic components that exceeded Mil Spec by two grades. That's one step above NASA specs.
If I had a PC made exclusively with parts of that quality, it would be worth $10,000. And, I'd be broke!

But even Pc's made from cheap parts, will last quite a while if properly taken care of. Keep them cool and protected from power surges and spikes.

However, once you fill the available memory on an SSD, the SSD can only add new information by erasing older data. This process is called a program/erase cycle, or P/E cycle for short.

Importantly, each SSD has a limited number of P/E cycles. Each P/E cycle gradually degrades the memory of an SSD’s cells until they eventually become worn down. At this point, you will no longer be able to rely on the SSD to store information. While the gradual wearing out of SSD flash cells doesn’t represent the same kind of failure as a mechanical malfunction on a HDD, it does mean the drive will no longer be usable."

While reading that article on SSD Lifespan, my mind wandered back to my first experience with a hard disk drive, in the 60's. It wasn't hermetically sealed, and did not have floating read/write heads. The air gap between the heads and the spinning disk had to be set by hand, and a Oscilloscope had to be used. That was back in the 60's, years before I built my first PC-XT clone.
The hard disks of that era were rated in Megabytes and not Gigabytes. My first HDD was a Seagate 20 MB drive. It didn't even have auto head parking. So I ran a little batch file that would park the heads in the drive, before I'd manually turn off the power, with the BIG RED switch on the side of the Power Supply.
OH, how things have changed!
Windows 12 can't be any worse than the changes I've already lived through in the past sixty years, or so. Bring it on!

I have not read through this long thread, so forgive me if my worrying about the security standards of current processors being compatible with W12 has already been answered. Any informed guesses?

As for SSD lifespan, I would hope they are better than mechanical drives. So far out of about 15 SSD's, I have had 2 that have had to be discarded.

I would take advantage of any free upgrades from W11to W12 if they are offered.

My first computer, a Hyundai Super 16V was an 8088 XT clone with a huge hard disk of 40MB! As far as I remember MS DOS 3.3 that came bundled with the computer didn't support a single 40MB partition, so I had to create two 20MB partitions, one for DOS and games and one for other data.

My first 2 computers did not have any sort of hard drive or hard card. And I know at least a few people here who started with HeathKits and other such older machines.

RE; DOS 3.3 - because it didn't support FAT16. That came from Compaq a bit later. DOS 3.x < 3.31 supported FAT which allowed for 32 MB drives max.

A dear old hardware buddy of mine recommended it to me when he thought I was getting just a little too cocky about transitioning to SSDs. He still didn't succeed in persuading me to change my mind. Sure, spinning rust has it's advantages but those advantages are wearing thin as the price of SSDs continues to drop.

Yup they die. SSDs do indeed die. USB sticks die too; but these modes of medium are more resistant to vibration and bumps in the night and what not. Plus they are a good deal lighter. There is a reason my PC (featured in my profile pic) weighs 82 lbs fully loaded and it isn't SSDs. Then again, I kinda sorta modded my PC to run all those drives as it wasn't made to hold that many mechanical drives to begin with.

I still can't fathom why people are still running mechanical drives in laptops. A stationary desktop or server I can understand but something mobile? That's like pinning a kick me sign on the back of an innocent victim. Yeah, I'd probably give Win 12 a go too but not on my Work Station. I've decided to keep this crate as a 7/11 unit. I have enough PCs to run Win 12 on after it is tweaked to eliminate TPM requirements and the rest of the MS BS accompaniments that will likely be included with it in the name of the Syndicate errrm... Consortium. Yeah, that's it... Consortium.

I had to do the same and mines a full tower. I have seriously lost count of how many drives I have, SSD & HDD. Interesting looking case you have. I remember looking at them once.

I don't regret getting it but I wouldn't mind owning one of those full sized four foot jobbies. That was kinda sorta before my time. I mean, they were around in my time for sure, but my interests were not steeped in computers back in the day. I was more into nature, chasing girls, biking, hiking, fishing, camping, etc. Just prior to the Millennium I got keen on computers and by that time they stopped making those big old towers. Before that it was just the Commodore 64 and the Tandy which my son taught me how to use. Omgg thank goodness we don't have to worry about parking the drive anymore!

I've slowed down in my golden years here, but yesterday I made a campfire and took my youngest fishing.
I can still appreciate the beauty of a well-dressed woman but I'm in no condition to start chasing them anymore — not even on a mountain bike!
Meh, I'll leave that for the younger bucks, behave myself, and continue to do all I possibly can in my power to appease she-who-must-be-obeyed. :winkt:

There is a chance we may have both been cut from the same bolt. I'm surrounded by rivers, lakes, and streams because I live in the North-west part of Alberta, situated smack dab in the middle of a forest (although a great deal of it was burned recently). The only reason I get high speed internet up this way is the oil. I'm about a three hours drive (3.5 if you obey the limit) from the capital and I can honestly say I don't miss city life at all. I still build PCs in exchange for moose meat coz Canadian govt. will hammer my pension if I deal in cash. TBH I have to say life has been good to me up this way too. Admittedly, it's not for everyone but I'm a baby boomer and my generation knows all about survival.

I just won't go there!
From the C-64 to my current HAL 9000, it's been a wild ride. HAL 9000? Well, I had to call it something, and that just sounded about right.
It rules my life and I fully expect it to push me out an airlock some day. ROFLMAO
Speaking of cases... I have three of the "Pac Man"case.
Two are currently in use as PC #1 and PC #2, while the third one is in Refurbishment. (getting a paint job and face lift)

Any guesses why it's called the "Pac Man" case?
Besides the DVD drive, I can get 7 HD's in there. Even more SSD's. I stop adding drives when I run out of SATA ports on the motherboard. lol
