Hello. I just started having this problem with Windows Explorer. Every time I press Alt+Left or Alt+Right to navigate through folders, it makes the "Asterisk" sound. It's getting to be very annoying and I can't seem to find any way to fix this. The only "solution" that I found was completely disabling system sounds which I don't wanna do. However, I later found out that if I press Alt+Left or Alt+Right, but I hold down the Alt key, let go of the Left/Right key, press the Down key, and release the Alt key, it doesn't make any sounds. Can you please get the sounds to stop without me having to press the Down key?

You haven't said whether you've check the Sound applet settings in the Control panel??

If the sounds are turned on, select No sounds and test. Then turn back on and explore for the sound you hear. Obviously there may be no specific listing for you key combinations, but that sound may be associated with something else that you'll have to do without.

is there a sound set for that action?

I found the solution. It was actually very simple. All that I had to do was restart my computer. It must've been some bizarre problem with my keyboard or a program on my computer.

I've marked my question as unsolved, again, because I'm still having this problem. After restarting my computer, the problem isn't there, at first, but after a while, the problem comes up, again, and explorer makes the default beep sound every time I press "Alt+Left" or "Alt+Right".

I've went over to the sounds in the Control Panel applet. There were three sound schemes for me to choose from. I chose "No Sounds" and of course, no sounds played. The other two options, "Windows Default" and "Windows Default (modified)" didn't solve my problem. The default beep still played. I didn't add any custom sounds to file explorer. I don't know the cause of this problem. For now, all that I can do is press "Down" after pressing the key combination.

So why not stick with this option?

Personally, I can't see any point in Windows singing to the user whenever certain (any!) functions are performed.

Due to my workflow, I prefer to have the sounds on and press the "Down" arrow key after pressing my key combinations.

Also, I found out that the default beep sound starts when I press "Alt+Up" in File Explorer, as well. This is a very odd problem that I have since I have another computer running Windows 11 and it doesn't have this problem. I'm gonna try and troubleshoot the problem that I have and see if I can find a solution for it.
