Windows modern standby causing Asus UX461 to hang (LTT video)

I am using the Asus UX461 from W10 to W11 upgrade. Actually, this problem is more than 1 year, but here is what I know. I am suffering from the same problem as describe in this LTT video. The problem is the powercfg /a sleep states. My laptop does not have the S3 state is not supported as stated in the LTT video as well. BIOS has been updated to the latest. No luck.

I've change the sleep to not sleep at all, but when I turn off the screen after some time, the pc hangs, even though the power says not to turn off. I don't have hibernate/sleep enabled. Just screen off. I am not sure what else to do. Any ideas?

results so your available power states can be understood.
Posting a screenshot of your Power options settings [Display off etc] can also be useful.

If, as I think you might be saying, your computer hangs during S0 Modern standby [which kicks in when the display goes off] then I suggest these tests:-
1 Does it behave correctly in Safe mode?
Boot to Safe Mode - ElevenForumTutorials
2 Does it behave correctly for another user account [create one for the test if you haven't already got a spare]?
Add Local Account - ElevenForumTutorials

If your answers are Yes, No then reinstall your display driver.

From an elevated command prompt, you could try disabling Modern Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) :
reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
Reboot after.
Next, to see if disabling Modern Standby has brought back Legacy Standby (S3 Standby) :
powercfg a
Also check if you can now get the Zenbook to sleep/wake like normal. If yes, I suggest that you keep using it in this manner.
Otherwise you can undo the registry change, like so (and remember to reboot again after) :
reg delete HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v PlatformAoAcOverride /f

I downloaded the bios update manually as it is not available after I've clean installed Windows 11.

In fact the problem started after I installed windows 11.

Here what happens to my PC:
1. I enable screen off to save battery (even though powered). I also do nothing when I close the lid, which is fine.
2. Whenever the laptop goes into sleep/hibernate mode, the power button blinks every 1 second.
3. With the power blinking also, I noticed my laptop no longer wakes up if I press any button. The laptop becomes hot (like playing games hot). If it is plugged in, it will continue to become hot and with the blinking light. If it is on power supply, it will drain the battery about 3 hours. I used to be able to just close the screen and open it again when I travel with my backpack. Because of this, I changed the power to not do anything when the lid close.
4. But this only works if the sleep or hibernate, or hd power off is not in effect. If any one of the setting is enabled, the laptop will go back to state no 2. onwards.
5. The only way to make the laptop work again is by long pressing the power button. The blinking light goes away. Then turn on the laptop again.
6. I now resort to disabling all sleep/hibernate/HD off and delayed screen off time. If I need to use again but busy, I just go and move the cursor and continue other work for a while.
7. Even though I put the lid to "do nothing" when I close the lid, the moment I close the lid, I get back to step no 2 again. Battery/powered. So need to press the power button again. So, I don't close the screen now, as I fear that will lead to the laptop being suspended.

I have another local windows profile on the laptop-it will suffer the same fate when any of the power options are enabled.
Did try safe mode earlier -but cannot detect any problems-functions normally. Did not try any power saving profile in safe mode. Not sure if you can do any power saving profile in safe mode.

I recommend taking no action at all until those factors can be considered.

means you have tested another user account & it experiences the same problem then I recommend reinstalling your display driver as it might have become corrupt.

Just check if S3 Standby is supported after the registry tweak is done (with reboot). But like I said there can be no guarantee that, even if it does say now that S3 Standby is supported, the sleep/wake behavior will work correctly. So, you still have to verify on that next.

Just to repeat the point I made earlier, S0 Modern standby starts as soon as your display turns off [which it does when you close the lid].

I don't know about you, but.. the simple fact that they made it nigh impossible to turn the built-in screen off WITHOUT causing the whole laptop to go to sleep has been being reason enough for a lot of people to stop wasting their time with Modern Standby. Just do a quick search on google and see for yourself that people are tired of not being able to, e.g., do everyday normal things like use their laptop to listen to music on Spotify or YouTube with the laptop's screen off. Not to mention if this doesn't bother you at all and it does work correctly for you, it might stop working correctly overnight after some future update has been installed, causing the laptop to run hot draining the battery or etc.. I spent literally months trying to fix it on mine, all to no avail. I was able to successfully bring back Legacy Standby on mine, which fixed the problem of it waking itself up inadvertently, usually within the next hour after it was put to sleep with Modern Standby. So, the first thing I would try is Legacy Standby. Next, you can try building skyscrapers on Mars. Or just get rid of the laptop IMNSHO, as LTT has it right, it's a giant lottery system, and has been that for several years now (mainly thanks to Microsoft).

I did the reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f in cmd prompt (admin) and I get this: The system cannot find the path specified.

I also did try to find this keyword in reg editor: PlatformAoAcOverride, nothing came out.

I also did the powercfg a again, and the same results as I originally posted at the top. Weirdly, my laptop gets very hot when the screen is dark, compared to when I am actually using the laptop.

• You've reported that the computer behaves correctly in Safe mode
• And I think you have reported that you have tested another user account & it experiences the same problem but I was confused by the words you used so am not sure. This test is important.

I think your first action should be to reinstall the display driver even if it means reinstalling the same version that you have now.
- There is no test for a display driver having become corrupt so reinstallation is the only way of knowing that this is not the cause of the problem.

If the problem continues then I think you will need to look in Event viewer to confirm that the computer is actually achieving S0 Modern standby when it should i.e. when the display goes off after your 3 mins / 15 mins.
Please use an earlier post of mine about how to set this up

which takes you through setting up an Event viewer, Custom view for power state changes. This Custom view works without alteration in both S0 Modern standby and S3 Sleep computers.
Make a note of the time the display goes off, wait a while then make a note of the time you try checking the Custom view results and the time you reboot the computer [if that becomes necessary].
In the Event viewer Custom view results look for entries between the time the display goes off and the time you try checking it / the time you reboot the computer.

• Is it achieving S0 Modern standby?
• Is it staying in S0 Modern standby or are there further power state changes?

I did see your response about trying to disable S0 Modern standby using that reg command.

• I suggest you complete testing before trying again.
• I also suggest you make a new system image & a new backup of your own files before trying again. Whilst I have only seen it once, one computer I disabled S0 Modern standby on became unusable afterwards [it couldn't read its disk correctly] and I had to restore its system image.

I've successfully disabled S0 Modern standby on another computer and I've seen a lot of reports by other TenForums & ElevenForum users of having done it as well.
Some people reported that disabling S0 Modern standby automatically enabled S3 Sleep but others reported that it did not. If your motherboard maker has a user forum then I think it would be worth finding out how others fared there.
If you do decide to try again then I suggest you use the tutorial - Disable Modern Standby in Windows 10 and Windows 11 - ElevenForumTutorials
- I cannot see anything wrong with the command you tried before and I hope that there was merely a mistake when entering the command.

In that case, if we can assume that you had entered the command correctly (without typos), your system files may be corrupted. Run the sfc /scannow command and see if it reports errors. If it reports errors that it says it can NOT fix, then try dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and, if that also reports errors that it says it can NOT fix, try a repair install (in-place upgrade) of Windows. The fact that it cannot find reg.exe (which is in C:\Windows\System32) definitely is a problem.

That's normal. The reg add command is what creates that value, but you received an error so as a result the value wasn't created.
