When I try to install this update from Windows udpate always fails, says Retry:

2024-07 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for arm64-based Systems (KB5040527)
Install error - 0x800f0991

Any idea?

Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.


  • Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
  • Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot
  • Click on Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter



Download Windows updates manually.


  • Go to the official Microsoft update catalog;
  • Enter a specific update code, for example, KB4481031
  • Select the correct version and click Download
  • Click on the link and Windows will update your computer



Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

Downloaded the file "windows11.0-kb5040527-arm64_758b6264b7f6b9ad972501e1793df34a46c34c36.msu" and looks like it's installed but at the end fails:

Download the Windows Repair Tool from Bleeping Computers and run the Windows Update repair. It’s worked for me on a few occasions with peoples Windows PC’s

Yes, there is an Update Troubleshooter. It's fairly well buried though.

Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other Troubleshooters

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
The troubleshooter just says that an issue was detected, with a triangle warning, but no specifics. Also says that troubleshooters have moved and the tool will be retired.
Trying to update still ends up with same error.

Do you think it uses magic to fix things? It utilises the commands and processes available to repair windows issues. Most likely official powershell commands that seem to be eluding you.

There is a Reset Windows Update tool in this utility. No need to download anything, runs from a PowerShell terminal with admin privileges
