Solved WOTIZIT -- Updating via WU to latest Canary release ????

Is this normal on WU update -- I'm running this in a VM though. Never seen that message before.

I have never seen that before looks like Windows 11 update assistant, but it's not looks legit to me.

I haven't seen it either on my Win11 RTM computers, 2 Home and 2 Pro. Don't know how a VM could be different and I never got into Win11 Insider Preview.

I think I've solved it.

WU refused my initial update from a VM because I specified in the VM for the Virtual CPU use Hypervisor default (qemu64) - I'm using Arch Linux with KVM/QEMU as the host- and this CPU now no longer seems supported (was working on previous release). So I've gone back to "Host Pass thru" and retrying the update is when I got the message and it installed OK.

I replicated the same thing with the same ISO and a clone of the old VM with the previous build on another machine running the same Arch Linux OS but changed the vCPU to host past thru and WU was OK.

So I'll mark this as solved -- I don't think there's any malware etc and I created the ISO without doing any of the "Rufus" bits to bypass bits of the OS so you can run on all sorts of hardware.

I'm not sure why Ms is "having a go" at Virtual CPU's -- if you've got a dual or quad processor machine (i.e 2 or 4 physically separate processors) I'm not sure that I'd want to allocate the whole of those and the zillions of cores to the VM. After installation I set the vCPU back to hypervisor default and it's running perfectly !!!.

I always wanted to try a Xeon dual CPU setup but budget keeps getting in the way. Now Intel has mentioned a CPU that can run without RAM, interesting to see how that plays out. It's been a few years since I last saw a hint of 128-bit computing.

IBM mainframes - but with the Hercules emulator and the "Turnkey" project you can run even Z/390 Mainframe OS on a PC !!! Typically you can run MVS/SP with JES2 on a PC -- I remember when a 303X type IBM mainframe (was called Big blue back in those days) needed a large room and those huge discs (3380's etc) which had a fraction of today's disks capacity - even internal PC nvMe's !!!. The popular 2314's disks had around 29 mb (yes MB !!) capacity !!




I'm sure some old timer Sysprogs might enjoy this stuff !!!!

While MVS/SP2 is in the public domain you will need a license for s/390 though !!!! - not cheap so I haven't attempted that one. - Same for IBM MVS/ESA.

(I've obviously got too much spare time today -- need to contact some people in the UK but I think the whole country is on strike currently or when doing their WFH they are in the local boozer or waiting 97 hours at A&E) !!!! - Mind you I'm still getting paid - and in €'s too -- great being a freelancer !!.
