WOW - NVMe storage prices have really been dropping

I built my PC back in December of 2020. So, it's almost 3 years old.

At the time, i bought a WD SN850 2TB drive and it was $449.99. While I wanted 2 drives and 4TB of space, I didn't want to spend $900 on it.

Now, an SN850x 2TB is only $149.99 at Amazon right now.

It might finally be time to break open the case, remove my GPU and x570 chipset shroud and install another NVMe.. May even go with the 4TB SN850x, as it's $279.

This is just a breath of fresh air as we all watched the prices of GPU's and mobo's going up, up and up over the past 5 years.

Even allowing for exchange rate (and bear in mind we pay 20% VAT in the price), we can get a 2 TB NVME at nearly half the price although it is nominally slower (5000 vs 7300) MB/s. A year ago I would have paid a lot more.

An NVME is almost as cheap now as an SSD.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
I've been looking at a this 4TB Samsung EVO SATA drive to replace my 2TB games drive. This one has been hovering around $200 within the last 5 months. Was also looking at this Samsung NVMe 2TB 990 Pro (currently $167) drive to replace my 1TB 970 Pro photos drive.

Amazon had a really good deal back in July where the 4TB SATA drive dropped to $189, and the 990 Pro NVMe dropped to $140, but I ended up essentially buying a new headphone, and some CDs and there went to money for the drives.

But yeah, SSD/NVMe drive prices are dropping all over the place. Great time to get one.

You can get nvme deals on Black Friday. I got this SK-Hynix last year for $170 and it is better than the black sn850 I have. They also had blacks on sale. Wait until then and save some.

I'd like to stay with the WD drive because then I can manage both of the drives from 1 piece of software, the WD Dashboard utility. In my box, I also have a 2TB Sandisk SATA for running my games off....and since that's a WD company, I can also manage that drive from the utility as well.

Ah yeah, for sure. I'm not desperate for space, and I don't expect prices to go up, but probably will just fall the longer I wait.

The British Consumers' Association monitored Amazon UK prices throughout the year and discovered that 98% of Black Friday prices had been the same or lower at other times of the year.

As much as I like to still keep the icon of Samsung Magician always visible in the notification area of my taskbar, I don't tend to do a lot of management with it on my 2TB Samsung 980 PRO. Granted, the blue spinning wheel under Drive Health in the Drive Dashboard looks pretty amazing IMO. But seriously I don't think the wheel is worth paying that many additional Eurocents. lol

Well I beg to differ. Here is the Amazon price for that nvme drive I posted above. The big dip in November 2022 is when I bought it at a svaings of $100 (63%). If you have any idea what your doing and keep your eyes open there are often good deals to be had, :-)

Be careful buying WD ssd. They’re splitting their company into two and will not be producing ssd anymore. I’m not sure what the warranties may look like after this happens. Just a bullet point to consider.

* I have Samsung, but used a WD ssd for years with no issues.. just so this doesn’t sound biased lol
