.7zip Requirement

I saw that Windows is now integrating 7zip support with the latest major update. I have not yet upgraded to it yet and probably won't for a while. I do not know the extent of the actual compression support is though. Can I now create a 7zip file without having the application installed? Can I now open .rar and 7zip files without having anything installed?

If the archive was created in another program, it may not work.

Yes, and Yes.

The 'Additional options' give quite a bit of control. The one thing you cannot do is create a password protected archive, for that you'd need 7-Zip itself.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

Perfect. One less application I can not install moving forward.

It doesn't support Zstandart and LZ4 for example.
Support for obsolete formats is pointless, zip is sufficient in this case.

Just install 7zip (the program).
That way, some update down the road a ways...won't break Windows integration of 7zip. ^^

7zip is a very tiny program. It's install directory is 5.5MB.


Good practice...
If MS comes out with some program that has a 3rd party version (non-MS)... always choose the 3rd party version. ^^

Lately, for some reason... MS doesn't seem to be able to code their way out of a wet paper bag.
They even break their own apps. :/
