About performance of an usb ssd

Should I enable this option
Can something go wrong if windows crashes
I use the SSD(Samsung PSSD 7 1TB)for my games and I never remove it(I actually wish to hide it from the list in the Safely Removal)
Will I actually get better perfomance(currently it feels like the SSD is not working as good as before)

The drive is connected to my one and only usb-c port
And actually,does that option affects read speed?

In the taskmanager I often see it showing read speeds at bellow 100mb when loading games

Just for info, USB4 port, USB4 Enclosure and USB4 C cable connected external drive. Difference between write caching and quick removal.

Important to use the SRH though. Quite a big gain. Worth checking out.

You will not be able to detect impact on difference in speed on an SSD enabling that optíon.

Write caching is only intended for drives that are slow in writing data to drive such as older usb flash drives and SD cards.

Just leave it at default setting i.e. disable write caching. Changing it would have no significant impact but theoretically you could lose data if disconnected but highly unlikely.

Basically this is a non issue for an SSD.

Uhh... Obviously you didn't look at the post right above yours! Sure seems like it can make a significant difference for writes!

Given that you lose a lot of performance through the USB port for the SSD. I don't know if I would do that, myself. I do have a USB SSD for some backups, but I wouldn't bother doing it to load programs, especially with games that have a lot of drive access. You lose most of the speed of an SSD as you are limited by the data transfer speed of USB.

For myself, I don't think I would bother doing what you are doing. I would put the SSD into the PC, at least to a SATA port. At least you will get performance out of the drive that way.

I've tested changing the directive... no difference at all, but yeah, I use a USB3.0 case, and I hit a theorical limit.
This works only on USB4 ports and using nVME cases, since they can take advantage of such a huge bandwith.

Small question @vsub , did you reboot between changes?

I would never enable Write-caching on an external drive. The danger is if you ever disconnect it before the writes are done from the cache you risk losing data. Of course if you are very careful and always make sure the data is finished writing to the drive then go for it.

Assuming the listed Laptop:
The OP has one USB 3.2 Gen 2 USB-C port, and the packaged USB SSD is also USB 3.2 Gen 2.

Thus the benchmarked Read speed is correct for the hardware, and indeed the same as the USB SSD specs.

The safest option is the Quick removal (Default). There will be little to gain with the "Better performance" option.

That is theory and your wishes, however people are not perfection they make mistakes, with just one USB-C port that mistake is more likely.
