AC-3 (Dolby Digital) codec no longer included with Windows 11 version 24H2

 Microsoft Support:

AC-3 is an audio codec that supports multi-channel (“surround sound”) audio. It's also known as Dolby Digital.

On versions of Windows prior to Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is included.

Beginning with Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is no longer included with Windows. However, many device manufacturers will pre-install an AC-3 codec. Also, if you upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2 from an earlier version of Windows, the AC-3 codec will be retained. In these cases, you will still be able to play files encoded with the AC-3 audio codec.

I was wondering the same. And when I first read this, briefly went in search of an independent download for it, with no luck.

Dolby is now obsoleted as an audio format. That's why it was removed from Windows 11.

Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is no longer included with Windows. Now, you can install Microsoft Dolby Digital Decoder/Encoder MFT support into Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100 via AnWave Windows Key-Point.

1. Download AnWave from AnWave
Or AnWave 2024 | AMD Radeon Software Customize Setup - More Radeon Software Installation Options

2. Extract AnWave_v2.1.3.8_20240531_Stable_Release_LS2_Installer.exe. It is a self-extracting file.
3. Run AnWave.exe. Menu > Tools > Windows Key-Point
4. Click Install AC-3 Decoder MFT / Install AC-3 Encoder MFT button.
5. Finish!

Adobe Premiere Pro uses Microsoft's native AC-3 Codec, and you can use this tool to regain AC-3 encoding/decoding support for Windows 11 24H2.

I just noticed that i could not import mp4 files with 5.1 audio into Premiere Pro, on a fresh install of Win 11 24H2. But when i download AnWave 2024 version 5.42.15.24 there is no option for installing anything AC3 related in the Windows Key Point section.

Was this removed from AnWave?

It's retained if you upgrade to 24H2 from an earlier version so I guess doing a clean install of 23H2 and then an in-place upgrade would be the solution.

Thank you very much! :)

The Dolby AC-3/AC-4 Installer is by far the best decoder in this thread since Windows Media Player as well as Adobe Premiere Pro got audio. I am not a heavy user of Windows Media Player but when i open a file with Dolby Digital audio i get only the video and a pop-up saying that the audio codec is no longer included. That issue is gone as well now! :)

Does the AnWave not work for everything? Speaking about AnWave, I thought Dolby Digital Atmos would have included Dolby AC-4? Maybe we can let AnWave's author @uncyler825 answer that one.

That is mentioned in comment #29. AnWave is also a stand-alone app. Does Dolby Digital Atmos mean AC-3 or also AC-4 as it's confusing.

For me AnWave worked with Adobe apps such as Premiere Pro 2025 but Windows Media Player still gave a pop-up saying that the Dolby codec is not there and was silent, ie no audio. This was with AnWave "standard" and the AnWave stand-alone app. This was solved when i used Dolby AC-3/AC-4 Installer from MajorGeeks.

Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3) and Dolby AC-4 can contain Atmos.
Thanks and Interesting, I think I was confused because Dolby Digital originally as it was known was also known as AC-3 so I thought AC-4 was another name for Dolby Atmos. Haven't kept up with the different Dolby names. Which one is the more superior audio, Dolby TrueHD or Dolby AC-4 as it seems Dolby Atmos is more to add up to 64 speakers to any of the three you mentioned. Can Download Dolby AC-3/AC-4 Installer - MajorGeeks also handle Dolby TrueHD?

I'm actually not familiar with Dolby (surround)

The closest I ever recall hearing it was in a test app to show you the effects. I remember thinking… meh.
Great if you have a 7.1 surround system. I did have (have new ones now) 7.1 enabled headphones. I must admit, it sounds great with movies and games, but this many years later, I have no idea what driver is uses to pass it through to my headphones.

I haven't used Dolby AC-3/AC-4 Installer - MajorGeeks.

Windows 11 23H2 Build 22631 or earlier already contains native Dolby Digital supports. Basically, just install the AC-3 files from the previous version onto the 24H2.

I'm actually not familiar with Dolby (surround) as I've never had hardware or setup that uses it, but from what I read, Atmos is an extension to those 3 Dolby formats which adds vertical audio information similar to video game positional audio
I haven't either since I have always had only a dual channel setup. People used to think Lexicon's Logic 7 was the best when it came to surround sound.
