Solved Acer Laptop 24H2 install stops. How do I find out what the problem is?

So it finished the install and rebooted. So far so good. Does windows delete the windows.old folder at some point?

I should probably wait to do that and wait to run the DISM command?

correct. you can leave it and it will remain for 10 days, if you do not want to reclaim that space now.

you can also make a disk image/clone now, then delete it. then if you need to roll back, you will have to restore your backup and then roll back

I will make a disk image either way, but still wait the 10 days.

Yes, you do need it to roll back. It's not just the Windows.old folder that's required, there's also a hidden C:\$windows.~bt folder that's essential. Windows should automatically delete the folders 10 days after the upgrade.

If the 10 days are not up yet then you can extend this up to 60 days (and can extend again before the 60 days are up).

Or you can delete windows.old and it's associated folder now, if you thing you won't need to roll back.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

As I mentioned before, SSDs will have periodically some clusters dying due to write + erase operations making it short on size. So ideally is to move some huge files that are constantly rewritten and folders with temp files or folders that has files you download and then delete afterwords from SSD and transfer them to the WD HDD (your WD10SPZX-21Z10T0 is a HDD not a SSD)
Some suggestions: (I can give you details on how to do it)
- On the D: drive, create a D:\System\Temp folder. Set this folder as Windows temp and your profile temp folder.
- Move virtual memory C:\pagefile.sys to D:\pagefile.sys and set min = max = 16GB
- Move the download folder to D:\Download

I also have a 128G SSD for Windows and programs an a 1T HDD and what I did was to transfer C:\Users to D:\Users so all User profiles are on the HDD during installation.

you can use CrystalDiskInfo if you want to monitor the status of your drive's health. it will take terabytes of writing to do real damage though. i wrote 153tb to a WD ssd in a work environment last year and it still showed 84% health...

No, it won't. You will see drive getting smaller and smaller. It's a slow and constant degeneration. Your drive probably will still have more than 80% in 5 years.
In your case, more important is keep free space larger than 40G.
