Acronis True Image was big in the early days of disk imaging. I used it a long time ago, so my opinions of what it is like today are worthless. I had failures back then. But probably back then, failures wouldn't have been uncommon. I still remember how hard it was to remove after I tried to uninstall it. There were remnants everywhere. But I'm sure that would be a lot better today also.

I just never went back to it after finding better alternatives. These days, there are quite a few very reliable disk imaging applications. They've come a long way.

I also use Everything Search to look for leftovers. RAPR to look for drivers

That won't find stuff loading in the registry on startup. I always check Program Files, Program Files x86 & Program Data for left over folders plus stuff in Appdata folders for all accounts.

But Everything will find any file with the name you search. Acronis, true image, true, Cyber Protect, etc. It even finds Prefetch files, etc. Easier than just searching folders

I had hideous experience with Acronis T.I in the past - so was never minded to have another go with it -- and I'm not going down the subscription route again,

My solution to all this stuff is to download the free bootable edition of gparted which for copying / cloning entire disks or just individual partitions is simple --the UI is almost identical to any Windows partition managers plus there's a terminal built in and as its based on a debian system you can use all sorts of tools such as dd, rsync etc.

GParted -- Download

gparted.org

Use rufus or similar to create bootable USB from ISO.

try it in a VM if you are unsure.

For simply cloning disks or partitions or resising them why bother paying for software that does this stuff. For data backups / archives / incremental / differential backups then there might be a point in it but since one can get cheap 14 / 16 TB classic HDD's for around 150 USD these days just connect via a powered sata to USB device and you've got oodles and oodles of disk space for any amount of backup a typical home user might want. Keep the windows OS small so if you re-install Windows you don't have to restore your data.

Checked for leftovers this morning

One Leftover Folder was found in C:\ProgamData (that deleted fine)

No left overs found in Registry

Cleaned Left Over Folders in App data, Local Folder on User Account & Admin Account

Registry checked, and searched for any leftovers with file names listed in above linked post--nothing found

So think all is well!

If you have Revo I would use that. It does a much better job of removing stuff that Windows Uninstall leaves behind.

Yes i used Revo Portable Uninstaller yesterday on Acronis CyberProtect, still had a few left overs that found this morning, but not a whole lot.

Got Macrium Reinstalled early this morning

Ran sfc /scannow (all good)

So think i'm all good

The one thing often forgoten in these Jedi vs Empire wars threads is that Acronis is really geared to corporate users and Macrium Reflect is more generic (although recent changes e.g. annual licence fee suggests Macrium Reflect is moving same way as Acronis.

Naturally we are biased (for good reason) on these forums.

Regrettably, I suspect Reflect Home V9 will be lease only and then there will be a stronger incentive for many domestic users to move to other tools.

In the end, now Hasleo has (Rapid) Delta Restore in its free version, there is not much it cannot do albeit perhaps a bit clunkier than Macrium Reflect (main shortcoming is no Image Guardian).

I have Hasleo installed on my second laptop. Using it to make backup images was OK. Unless I was doing it wrong making the rescue disk was a pain. All it did was format the flash drive. I wound up making it manually and using Rufus to make it bootable. I haven't tried doing a Hasleo restore yet.

As both a BETA tester and current user, HBS (Hasleo Backup Suite) provided no unusual issues associated with either creating BOOTable (or BOOT menu) media, UFD & ISO included. Restores, both complete and Delta, work just fine. I even used their CLI (Command Line Interface) for GFS (Grandfather, Father, Son) backup schedules before they finished developing their scheduling/retention features... also worked just fine.

Personally, I'm not sure I would continue to use an imaging product unless I knew it can restore its images correctly ... too much risk involved if it's your primary imaging tool on that 2nd laptop

I do agree with what you said. The reason I haven't tried the image is because the Hasleo images are just extra back up images. I Might give it a try next week when I make my weekly backups. I make System images on both of my desktops because I'm running the Canary builds on them.

Refleact has the viBoot feature to test booting from the backup image file to a virtual machine

I've Done a Macrium Reflect Restore in the past a couple of times, both times worked fine for my use cases. Never Tried Reflects viboot feature, but maybe in the future i can, then again i haven't messed with virtual machines that much in my PC use cases.

It's a snap. If you don't have the viBoot feature of MR installed, and if you DO have the Windows Hyper-V feature on, you can add viBoot to MR in Programs and Features, Macrium Reflect Home, Modify, add viBoot. Quick and easy. Then in MR, if you click the Existing Images tab, you'll see the viBoot icon (active, not greyed out) in the toolbar just above the list of available images. Click it.

From that point on, MR does all of the work for you. The default choices work just fine.

And if you just did this as an experiment to see how it goes, MR lets you Unmount and Delete the VM easily.

As the commercial goes, ""Try it; you'll like it."

(But just to give yourself peace of mind about this process, please create a new image before you start, so that if you don't like what you've done (and undone, maybe), you can restore that image, and you'll be back to "Happy as a pig in a mud puddle.")

How did you create the USB boot disk. All I could get it to do was format the flash drive. I had to create the ISO and use Rufus to create the bootable flash drive. Like I said earlier I may have been doing it wrong.
