Personalization Add or Remove Folders under This PC in File Explorer in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the 3D Objects, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and/or Videos folder(s) in File Explorer > This PC for all users in Windows 11.

Starting with Windows 11 build 25136 and build 22621.160, Microsoft is introducing a refreshed layout of the left navigation pane in File Explorer which makes it easy for you to navigate to folders that matter to you.

Known Windows Folders which are available by default in the navigation pane are no longer displayed as a "Folders" group under This PC to keep that view focused for your PC’s drives.

If you like, you can add the 3D Objects, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and/or Videos folder(s) back under "Folders" in File Explorer > This PC.


You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove folders in File Explorer > This PC.

This does not add folders under "This PC" in the navigation pane of File Explorer.

This does not affect folders in the navigation pane.

Add Folders under This PC in File Explorer


1 Do step 2 (all), step 3 (3D Objects), step 4 (Desktop), step 5 (Documents), step 6 (Downloads), step 7 (Music), step 8 (Pictures), or step 9 (Videos) for the folder(s) you want to add.


 2. Add All Folders to This PC

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .reg file below, and go to step 10 below.​

10 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

11 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

12 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

13 If File Explorer is currently open, then either refresh (F5) or close and reopen File Explorer to apply.

14 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file(s) if you like.




Option Two

Remove Folders under This PC in File Explorer


1 Do step 2 (all), step 3 (3D Objects), step 4 (Desktop), step 5 (Documents), step 6 (Downloads), step 7 (Music), step 8 (Pictures), or step 9 (Videos) for the folder(s) you want to remove.


 2. Remove All Folders from This PC

This is the default setting.


A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .reg file below, and go to step 10 below.​

I've tried everything in this thread, after updating to Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Build: 22631.3737 all the folders vanished except for 3D Objects.
The following fixed this:

In Registry Editor, I went to the following "folder"

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

I deleted all the entries in the folder, except for DelegateFolders.

Opening File Explorer, no folders where shown. I then re ran the REG file, reopened File Explorer and now the Folders reappear. Really strange.

Maybe handy for others who might have a similar issue, and I have never modified the Microsoft Defaults

Ahh.. No Shawn I didn’t. I must of missed the update message. I actually haven't re-read the main tutorial and used reg files from quite a while back.

It wont take long for me to restore an image pre trying to fix the issue.
I shall do that, use the new reg files and check back with you regarding the result.

If you want them in alphabetical order, I’ve resorted to using “This PC Tweaker” from winaero and manually adding them back. That will put Desktop as the first folder instead of the last.. which I don’t understand why it is last when restoring via reg entries anyways…

Going off on a bit of a tangent, why do folders which get added disappear after updating to a new build? I'm sure it only seems to happen on Insider builds. It's really annoying to have to continually re-add them back in. It' seems any personalization of Explorer gets reset after an update.

Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for some things to get reset back to default by an update.

I wasn't being able to hide the folders from explorer (under desktop), but finally did so by adding
HiddenByDefault=1 to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\[CLSID]

Yeah, it's not uncommon for an update to sometimes undo modifications and revert them back to default like this.

Can anyone confirm that "Adding" these Reg Entries to Windows "10" won't do anything?

I've compared the two Reg Entry sections and Win10 HAS the "NameSpace" Code Strings that the Tutorial has for each of the folders.
However, there's nothing in those strings except the (Default).

So, I'm thinking that "adding" the "enabling" code for those folders to Win10 which already has those Folders "showing" shouldn't do anything right?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm starting to use an "Unattended.xml" script on my Windows installs, and the one I'm using disables various things for both Win10 and 11, all in one script.

So, I would like to add the Add Folders Reg entries to it so my Win11 system works like it should..... apole Microsoft. :(
Do they not comprehend that we DO NOT have "Easy access" to those folders really ANY other way, other than ya "right-clicking" the Taskbar Folder Icon?

I'm NOT asking how to add and remove folders from Windows 10, I'm asking if adding the code for THIS Tutorial to a Windows 10 Registry, if it will hurt anything or not.
Like I said, I'm using an Unattended.xml when installing windows that changes lots of things, including adding Registry entries, and so I'm wondering if adding THESE Reg entries if it will do anything to hurt Win10?
