BSOD only with non-Admin accounts

My PC has one admin account (mine) and two non-admin accounts for family members. Yesterday, my grandson, who games on the PC under his own non-admin account encountered a weird BSOD that looked a bit like the normal one but was unreadable. The text was fuzzy and repeated across the screen several times, like a display driver issue, perhaps. After much experimentation, I verified that the crashes occur with any non-admin account and occur a minute or so after logging in, regardless of the user activity - or non-activity. They do not occur in safe mode. If I elevate the account to admin status, the issue disappears, but obviously, I don't want to do that. I tried having him log in to a fresh account with the same results. My wife's account is now doing the same thing.

Running Windows 11 Pro version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4317)

Any help much appreciated!

Hello @Pete K and welcome to ElevenForum. :-)

1. You get ten cookies, just for filling out your computer specs.
2. Sound like an issue with the standard accounts themselves.
3. I would check out the link below. Make sure you read all of it. :-)

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I really don't think the issue is with the accounts. As I said, I created a fresh new account for my grandson, and I get the same crashes with it unless I elevate the account to admin status. But I will try deleting his profile as suggested and see if that helps. I'll have to export his passwords from the browser first. I'll come back later and report on the results. Thanks again.

I think the operative word here is "grandson".
They can corrupt anything on a computer.
Grandsons have special powers, adults can only dream of. :-)

I can't think of anything else that could affect only the standard accounts, except something to do with their user profiles.

From the tutorial linked above...

Deleting the user profile of an account will reset the account back to default without having to delete the account. A new default profile for the account will automatically get created when the user signs in to their account next. Apps installed from the Microsoft Store will also be automatically reinstalled.

This can be handy if the account's current profile has gotten corrupted, or you just wanted to reset the account back to default.

But that's all just guesswork on my part.
Wait for @zbook to analyze your logs. He has special log reading powers. :D

If it's happening with two different accounts, and it goes away when you give them admin rights, I doubt it's the user profiles, especially if it works on a fresh, new account.

I would suspect some "helpful" app running in the background. Start with the Startup Apps in Task Manager, and disable things one or two at a time, to see if the problem disappears. I would start with anything to do with hardware, e.g., an app that goes along with your graphics or sound, something of that nature.

Are you suggesting an "app" that needs Admin privileges to function properly?
And it only malfunctions on Standard accounts?

Sounds possible, but I can't imagine what it could be.

It sounds like my best course of action at this point is to wait for a log file guru to examine my logs. I do appreciate all the suggestions and will continue to monitor this thread.

Well there are apps that need admin privileges. Less common than they used to be, but they still exist. But I was more thinking some buggy interaction that takes place between an app and a driver when the user is not admin, which doesn't occur when they are.

--- My Windows PE testing environment lies here, (because I like retro), but I CAN and HAVE run beta versions of Windows 11. 21996 was the version. Also, I have lots of experience of Win11 and 10, and know how to deploy the OS. ---
